Romney Holds Small Business Roundtable In Orange County ...

COSTA MESA (CBS) ? Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney attend a fundraiser in Irvine and a small round-table discussion with small business owners in Costa Mesa Monday, pushing what he called his plans to spur business growth with the goal of creating jobs.

The candidate began his day at a $1,000-per-person breakfast fundraiser at the Hyatt Regency Irvine, his third Orange County fundraiser since March. He held fundraisers in Irvine in March and Newport Beach in June.

?I have to encourage entrepreneurs and innovators to start their business, grow businesses ? keep more of their capital so they can invest in businesses,? Romney told the crowd. ?Doing those things will create more jobs.?

Romney also took the opportunity to reiterate his position that the White House?s health-care law will be bad for business, KNX 1070 reported.

?It becomes more and more mandatory?and what kind of insurance you?re required to have, ultimately what kind of care you?re allowed to receive,? Romney said. ?I?m sure these things will be more and more controlled by government and close off more and more opportunity for innovation.?

Occupy Orange County had planned to conduct a protest outside the fundraiser, but canceled those plans following the shooting in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater that left 12 dead.

?We choose to show solidarity with our thoughts directed toward the tragedy of Aurora, Colo.,? according to a message posted on the group?s website. ?Future protest will be announced.?

From Irvine, Romney traveled to Endural LLC in Costa Mesa for a small-business roundtable discussion with about a dozen people, again stressing his plans to support small entrepreneurs. Endural is a plastic container manufacturer.

As part of a 59-point plan to create jobs and economic growth, Romney has called for maintaining current tax rates on personal income; maintaining current tax rates on interest, dividends and capital gains; pursuing a conservative overhaul of the tax system that includes lower, flatter rates on a broader base; and repealing the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, replacing it with a streamlined regulatory framework.

Be wary of hitting employee with sudden criticism after FMLA request

Here?s something to watch out for when approving a supervisor?s recommendation to discipline or discharge an employee. If the employee has re??quested FMLA leave and was previously performing well, be suspicious of claims that she?s now performing poorly.

It?s certainly possible that her performance dipped. But it?s also possible that her supervisor resented her leave request.

Firing her under those circumstances may mean losing an FMLA retaliation and interference lawsuit.

Recent case: Candice worked as a teller at an Illinois bank and received good performance reviews. She didn?t tell co-workers she had multiple sclerosis. When she learned she?d need surgery, she finally told two supervisors that she would need FMLA leave.

Suddenly, Candice faced criticism from both. She suspected that they were worried her absence would mean she?d miss finishing some projects, causing the supervisors to lose a bonus.

Her FMLA leave request was ap??proved, but she was informed that, on the day the leave ended, she?d be terminated for poor performance. During the leave, the bank ignored her leave-extension request and fired her. ?

Candice sued, alleging FMLA interference and retaliation. The bank argued Candice was granted leave and therefore had nothing to complain about. The court disagreed. It pointed to the timing of events and the fact that the bank never considered her extension request. It sent the case to a jury trial. (Rowe v. U.S. Bancorp, No. 4:11-CV-4015, CD IL, 2012)

Final note: You can fire an employee for poor performance even when she is on FMLA leave. Just make sure you can back up the allegation with examples predating her FMLA leave request.

Iceberg breaks off from Greenland

An iceberg twice the size of Manhattan has broken away from the Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland.

Images from a Nasa satellite show the island breaking off a tongue of ice that extends at the end of the glacier.

In 2010 an ice island measuring 250 square km (100 square miles) broke off the same glacier.

The process that spawns icebergs - known as calving - is a natural, periodic process affecting all glaciers that terminate at the ocean.

A previous calving event at the same glacier in 2010 created an iceberg twice the size of this one.

Scientists have raised concerns in recent years about the Greenland ice shelf, saying that it is thinning extensively amid warm temperatures.

No single event of this type can be ascribed to changes in the climate.

But some experts say they are surprised by the extent of the changes to the Petermann Glacier in recent years.

"It is not a collapse but it is certainly a significant event," Eric Rignot from Nasa said in a statement.

Some other observers have gone further. "It's dramatic. It's disturbing," University of Delaware's Andreas Muenchow told the Associated Press.

"We have data for 150 years and we see changes that we have not seen before," Mr Muenchow added.

The calving is not expected have an impact on sea levels as the ice was already floating.

Icebergs from the Petermann Glacier sometimes reach the waters off Newfoundland in Canada, posing a danger to shipping and navigation, according to the Canadian Ice Service.

Floating "ice tongues" in front of land-based glaciers tend to block the ice flow headed for the sea. When ice chunks break loose, the land-based glaciers behind them often move more quickly, Mr Muenchow said.

The accelerated movement of the Petermann Glacier after the 2010 break was "noticeable but not dramatic," he said.

Moving On ? Casaubon's Book

Every time my life settles down enough for me to return to regular blogging, crazy stuff happens. ?First there was the sudden arrival of newborn baby Z. ? we were called at 2:30 pm and by 4:30, Eric was picking him up at the hospital. ?Since normally one gets more than umm?two hours to prepare for the arrival of a new baby, we were a little discombobulated.

Then there was much back and forth insanity as the County and C. and K.?s family attempted to make possible a visit from across the US to our area. ?We didn?t know until last Friday whether it would happen ? and all of a sudden it was. ?For five days we spent almost all our time shuttling the boys back and forth and hosting their family member to make it possible for everyone to spend time together. ?On Tuesday, in court, the family member was awarded custody of C. and K. (something that was absolutely the right thing, but that we hadn?t necessarily expected), and two few hours later, the boys were on a plane back across the US. ?There was barely time to say goodbye.

Fortunately I had packed their backpacks and suitcases, and swore up and down I?d send their things. ?They came with toothbrushes, one spare shirt each, a pair of socks and one of underwear, and their school backpacks. ?It will take six big boxes to mail their stuff back home. ?I want all my kids to leave with more than they came with ? I mean that in every sense, emotionally as well as physically, but building a basic platform of met physical needs is critical. Kids who have nothing feel they are nothing. ?Kids with clean clothes and stuffed animals to hug and books to read and shoes that fit haven?t got all they need ? but it is a start. ?That?s why I work so hard at building a stash of toys, clothes, books, etc? ? often the people they go home to have few financial resources, and while we aren?t rich, we have more than we need.

The boys had been with us for almost three months, and in that time, we?d become a family. ?We are fortunate ? K. and C.?s family wants to keep in touch and let us stay in the boys? lives, but it is a huge change, not just for Eric and I who lost our sons, but for my children, who lost their brothers. ?We are all sad to lose them, even though we are truly happy that they have gone home and are with their family.

Transitions in foster care are always hard, and almost always rapid. ?You get a call and the adrenaline starts pumping ? they?ll be here in 2 hours with four siblings, or you have to pick them up before things close at 5. ?The same with goodbyes ? in a perfect world there would be visits and transitions. ?In reality, mostly the kids leave as soon as the judge rules. ?You know it can happen, but you struggle with what to tell them (not wanting to raise either hopes or fears), and also with what to tell yourself. ?Then you are gathering up their things and taking them away.

In most cases, my kids have moved to live with family, in something called kinship care. ?The computer era has made it possible to find relatives that no one would have every known about. ?A new culture that values familiarity and stability means that relatives, or ?fictive kin? ? ie, someone the child has a prior relationship with ? get priority. ?I have never yet had to do the thing all foster parents fear ? send a child home to a family member that hurt or neglected them. ?I?m sure it will happen at some point, but generally they go to relatives. ?Sometimes this is a wonderful thing ? family work heroically to get the children. ? There was the grandfather who spent 36 hours on a bus, the father who nearly bankrupted himself trying to get into a place for him to take his kids.

Sometimes kinship care is less ideal ? a relative already struggling takes on children or more children to keep them in the family. ?It can work, or not. ?Some of my children arrive after these situations fail. ?But ultimately the push now to keep kids in their family and community ? as it should be. ? That doesn?t mean it isn?t hard. ?But it mostly is right.

I get more praise for doing this than I am comfortable with ? the reality is that what I am doing is NORMAL ? for most of human history, reaching out and taking in some extras was a natural reality of human existence. ?If you had a surplus of something ? food, shelter, time, love ? there were always those in need. ?For most of human history, short life expectations and high death rates meant that many children lived with kin or fictive kin for part of their lives. ?Indeed, in much of the world right now what I am doing would be utterly normal. ?Consider Uganda, where 95% of AIDS orphans were taken in by kin or fictive kin ? even with orphanages overflowing, most of the children were taken in by family. ?In Haiti after the earthquake, the countryside was filled with families overflowing with refugees. ?This is what people do ? we look around, and open up.

What?s different about my role is that I don?t have a biological relationship to the children I foster. ?But what I?ve found is that it takes less than two weeks for the kids to be as much mine as any I have given birth to. ?In all the placements we?ve had this year (and we?ve had quite a few), I?ve never had children I wouldn?t have wanted to keep. ?Biology just doesn?t count for much around here. ?Where it does matter is often to the children themselves ? stripped of everything else they had, their sense of belonging is important to them. ?Family may be fragile and tenuous, but they have a place there, and they long for it. ?Sometimes it can?t happen ? there is no one for them. In that case, adoption is the right thing. ?But more often, there is a place for them, if it can be found and facilitated, and when they are old enough to understand, that sense of place, however imperfect, is a gift for them.

I do not like to be told how wonderful I am for doing this, or how saintly. ?I do this for purely selfish reasons ? because I like it. ?As Asher, my littlest grew bigger, even though he?s only six, as Eli became a near-adolescent 12, I could see the days when my children would be grown coming ? and wanted to extend my time as a Mom a little longer. ?I don?t do it save kids, I do it to save a part of myself that I enjoy. ?I?m not a saint, I?m selfish ? it just happens that what I want and need (more kids, a challenge, a more intimate view of a part of my world I wouldn?t see otherwise) is good for the kids too.

Thus, att the same time we are all missing K. and C., there?s an excitement at the project of cleaning out the room they were living in. ?I wish I could have them back, annoying packrat tendency to keep every gum wrapper and all, but as long as I can?t, I admit, getting rid of the gum wrappers is kind of pleasant. ?And it is nice to be able to bring down the dolls that otherwise would have been beheaded as Clone Spies in games of ?Sith Lord vs. Jedi Master.? (While some boys like dolls, this batch was no respecter of baby dolls ;-) ) ?I would have the boys back in a heartbeat, but I also begin to look forward to the next kids who need us, and the next reconstitution of our family into something new.

K. and C. gave me a lot of gifts as a foster parent. ?They taught me how to handle some behaviors that are common responses to neglect and abuse. ?They showed me how much my boys really do want foster siblings their own age to play with. ?Their attentive caring for Eli, and the way they included him in the gang of boys made me realize that I could remind my own sons of ways to include Eli. ?Their pictures sit on my shelves, their artwork adorns my walls, the space they made in my heart is now open for someone else ? and they will stay there too.

One of the things hardest to understand about foster care is the question ?How can you give them back?? ?And I won?t lie, it sometimes breaks your heart. ?But loving children means wanting what is best for them, and as the song goes, ?Broken hearts won?t kill you, you?ll just want to die.? ?That wanting to die doesn?t last, thankfully. ?Sometimes I?m not sure what is best, or what is best isn?t possible, and that?s hard as heck. ?But often what?s best for them is for them to go ? I can see that what I can give K. and C. does not outweigh that. ? I can give them back because I love them. ?For the exact same reason I could keep them.

On Tuesday, when they went home, I called up an elderly relative of theirs who I have gotten to know over the course of court-ordered weekly phone calls. ?I knew no one would have had time to call her and let her know what happened in court. ?My first words to her were ?Your babies? plane takes off in 45 minutes. ?They?ll be home tonight? ?She cried. ?I cried. ?It was one of the best phone calls I have ever made.

They called yesterday when they made it to their new home, full of stories about their first plane ride and how excited they were to see their relatives. ?I cried, again, of course, although I tried not to. ?I told them how the baby goats were doing and what we?d been doing since, and promised to pack up all their toys and not forget one. ?And I said goodbye for now ? but we?ll send birthday presents and talk on the phone. ?It won?t be the same ? but they will remain family.

Then I went upstairs and put clean sheets on the beds that are not theirs anymore, and packed up the rest of their toys to mail to them, along with boxes of clothes and shoes, school supplies for fall and everything they will need (much provided my my wonderful extended family so they will never go short). ?I took down the baby dolls and the preschoolers toys, rearranged the books and swept up the accumulated choking hazards that two little boys leave in their wake wherever they go, snuggled Baby Z. (who will probably also go home at some point in the next few months) and wondered when the phone will ring next. ?Like the boys, I?m taking with me more than I came with.

(AP) ? A national legal panel that works to standardize state laws wants to simplify child custody rules for military service members, whose frequent deployments can leave them without clear legal recourse when family disputes erupt.

The Uniform Law Commission, an influential group of some 350 attorneys appointed by all the states, is meeting in Nashville on Wednesday to give final approval to the Deployed Parents Custody and Visitation Act, a set of uniform codes that state legislatures can adopt to standardize custody rights for parents who are deployed.

With deployments on the rise from the first Gulf War through the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, especially for National Guard and Reserve members, a majority of the states have implemented a patchwork of laws designed to protect service members in child custody and visitation cases. But the rules aren't consistent across the country, says Eric Fish, legal counsel for the Uniform Law Commission.

Some of the issues state courts have struggled with include how to determine jurisdiction when a military member is assigned to a base in another state, whether a step-parent or grandparent can have visitation rights when a parent is deployed, and whether a temporary custody arrangement should be made permanent when a parent returns from deployment.

"States are all across the board on those issues, so the impetus for the uniform act was to provide states with a well-conceived piece of legislation that takes the best practices from all the states that we have seen and give them some guidance," Fish said.

The commission has been crafting uniform state laws for over a century, including the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act, which is used in 49 states as a standard for establishing jurisdiction and child support orders between states. Its drafts are recommendations and need to be enacted by state legislatures.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class John Moreno deployed in 2007 while his wife was pregnant with his daughter, Vanessa, at their home in Virginia. But when he returned he found his wife had moved to Arizona and refused to let him see his daughter.

"She had fled from Virginia, where my daughter was born, to Arizona along with everything I owned and my daughter," he said. "She was seven months old."

He petitioned a judge in Virginia to order her to return his daughter, but he said the judge claimed that he didn't have jurisdiction in the case because Moreno had been given military orders to leave Virginia.

"The state of Virginia had jurisdiction and had every right to bring her back," Moreno said.

He's gone through a string of attorneys, but never had any legal success. He said he feels like he has fewer rights in the custody case because he is a service member and the courts don't know what rights he is afforded under the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which offers legal protections to service members during their military service, such as suspending certain judicial proceedings.

"It seems like every time I go to court I get beat up because I am in the military," said Moreno, who is 31 and living in New Orleans, working as an air traffic controller for the Navy.

Federal legislation has been introduced in Congress to amend the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act to include protections for deployed service members in child custody cases, but the Uniform Law Commission, which writes only state legislation, has opposed this effort because they argue family law is a state's rights issue.

Fish said while the proposed federal law and the uniform state code share some similarities, he said the federal law is vague and would create unnecessary complexity to an already complicated area of law.

"Service members themselves are going to be completely lost because they are going to hear there is a federal law and not understand the difference of who is in charge, federal or state law," he said.

U.S. Rep. Michael Turner (R-Ohio) is the sponsor of the federal legislation that passed in the House for seven straight years but has stalled in the Senate. He said his bill wouldn't create federal jurisdiction for custody matters, but instead would ensure minimum protections for military parents.

"Our bill only establishes a floor minimum," he said. "States could have and do have much more stringent pro-military custody statutes."

Turner said family law courts are biased against parents who are absent, even if it's because of a military deployment.

"Our bill certainly permits the courts' taking into consideration the best interests of the child, however, it does not permit the service member's absence in serving our country to be used against them," he said. "The uniformed law that's currently being considered would do absolutely that and would result in service member's losing their children."

Attorney Mark Sullivan, who practices family law in North Carolina and is a retired Army reserve JAG colonel, was the chair on the committee that helped draft the uniform code. He said one of the key points of the law establishes that the mere absence of a military parent from a state will not be used to deprive that state of custody jurisdiction.

"For most cases, a move is a purely voluntarily thing. For service member, the move is not voluntary and that involuntary move should not be punished by the loss of jurisdiction," said Sullivan, who is the author of the Military Divorce Handbook, 2nd edition, 2011, published by the American Bar Association.

Sullivan believes that states should regulate child custody, divorce and other family law and that has traditionally been the rights of the states.

"We shouldn't be writing rules, specific rules about custody, in the U.S. code," he said.

Once the uniform code is approved, the commission's members plan to push for the code to be introduced starting next year in state legislatures, said Fish.

"This is an approach to maintain states' rights and protect service members across the country, without creating an invasive federal system that is just going to confuse child custody," Fish said.

Class of 2012: 5 Europe grads face rocky future

Athina Prassa in Athens mastered English in four years studying at a private university. It's a skill that may not help her much as she hunts for work while hard-right thugs roam her blighted neighborhood.

Lucy Nicholls in London graduated from fashion school brimming with optimism. It took just a week for real life to step in: She fell victim to a scam that left her broke and desperate for work.

Rafael Gonzalez del Castillo in Madrid has pulled countless all-nighters to win a degree in his passion, architecture, just as Spain's building bust has littered the country with abandoned buildings.

Moira Koffi in Paris left her widowed mom in Normandy for "bohemian life" at the Sorbonne. Now the communications grad is heading into the real world.

Lutz Henschel in Berlin graduated near the top of his class with a degree in electrical engineering in Europe's top economy. Since January he's sent out nearly 40 applications, and is still chasing his dream of working in renewable energies.

Meet AP's Class of 2012: five talented and vibrant university graduates who face a rocky future as they emerge from the cocoon of student life and head into the worst economic crisis Europe has seen since the end of World War II, one that threatens to engulf an entire generation.

They're excited. They're scared. They're full of hope. And full of uncertainty.

The Associated Press will follow them over the next 12 months as their lives unfold in the crisis ? through text, photo and video dispatches, as well as webcam diaries and tweets straight from the graduates themselves.

Their drama will play out amid the somber realities of Europe's financial crisis, with profound implications for the future of young people everywhere. After all, the European Union is this interconnected world's biggest economy, and it's struggling badly.

Austerity is eroding an envied way of life. Long-cherished certainties about cradle-to-grave welfare are evaporating. As leaders scramble to extinguish one debt fire after another, the futures of ordinary people grow dimmer.

And a parallel crisis of demography is developing as the population ages rapidly, creating even more of a burden on this generation of young people who are finding it so hard to carve out a future.

Those twin crises will challenge Lutz as he leaves his studies in Europe's strongest economy, even with its low youth unemployment rate of 8 percent.

They will haunt Lucy and Moira in Britain and France, where more than a fifth of all young people are unemployed.

Athina and Rafa worry they'll have to move abroad to survive. In Greece and Spain, youth unemployment is above 50 percent.

"I don't think this time is suitable for fulfilling your dreams," Athina says. "That can happen later."

This is the AP Class of 2012:

ATHINA PRASSA, 22

"Want to see my fridge?" Athina asks a visitor.

She's a natural optimist but it's hard to keep up the cheer as she gazes at the lonely milk carton and container of butter on empty shelves.

"There are days," she says, "where I forget what it's like to eat meat."

Athina left her family home on the island of Lemnos four years ago to study at the private Hellenic-American University in Athens. Her parents were able to pay for her studies but not much more. It meant she ended up in a crime-ridden neighborhood notorious for its extreme-right thugs, where she lives rent-free in an apartment owned by her godmother.

Her parents sent her 100 euros ($120) a week at first, then cut it back to half that when they couldn't afford more.

Now she's on her own.

"My parents can't send me money anymore to live here," she says. "I'm really scared about the future."

She longs to work in Athens but is worried the crisis will force her to leave Greece.

She says the hard times, brought on by years of profligate spending in Greece, have taught her some valuable lessons: "It's funny, but I think the crisis has turned me into a better person, because I definitely hate money right now. ... I see how people go crazy about money."

She despises the anti-immigrant Golden Dawn party that roams her neighborhood.

Through all the turmoil, Athina still holds onto her dreams. She wants to work in fashion. She wants to backpack around Europe. She wants to visit America.

And she still manages to have fun with her friends in Athens ? which she calls "a jungle" ? by taking advantage of the beaches and free concerts and art exhibitions.

At recent a gallery event, Athina stood staring at a photograph of a demolition site. Spray-painted over it in red was one word: FUTURE.

LUCY NICHOLLS, 22

Lucy sits against a backdrop of rose-patterned wallpaper emblazoned with the word "Wish," the name of the fashion magazine that's her graduation project.

She's presenting it at a London show called RAW to launch Middlesex University fashion grads like herself, exuding a mixture of confidence and jitters.

The fashionista with artsy glasses and bright red hair has paid a Lithuanian company 2,000 pounds ($1,550) to print 500 copies of WISH, which she's planning to ship to customers.

She concedes her optimism verges on the "cocky."

But she also has a dose of realism: "I'm going to need money very soon. Luckily the magazine is going to bring in a tiny, weeny little bit ... But I'm going to need a job pretty soon, that's for sure."

A week later, disaster strikes: The printing company has gone bust and disappeared with her money.

Now she's broke and needs a job fast: "I realize because of this catastrophe with the magazine I need work now. I really, really need to be making money."

The setback doesn't keep her down for long: She's picked up some freelance photography work for a London PR agency that's helping her pay the bills. Meanwhile, she has revamped her resume to wade into her first real job hunt.

Lucy says her teachers didn't prepare her for life: "We don't get told anything about industry or the real world. We didn't ever get told about what jobs were really out there."

Half-English, half-French, Lucy comes from a rural town in Surrey, south of London. She says her father warned her about how hard life can be: "You have to be prepared to be living off beans."

Fluent in French, she says she could try Paris for a while ? but things aren't much better there, and in any case she sees her future in the British capital.

"I've been told by everybody London is where it's at, London is where you've got to be."

RAFAEL GONZALEZ DEL CASTILLO, 24

Rafael ? or Rafa as everyone calls him ? is a budding architect in a nation that's gone through one of the worst building busts in modern times.

He loves his field. He loves Spain. But he fears his future lies abroad.

Like millions of other young Spaniards trapped in the nation's devastating economic spiral, he says he'll jump at any opportunity for rewarding work ? be it in Sudan, Chile, Alaska or Mongolia.

He just presented his final project ? a design for urban greenhouses and terraced farmland on the marshy banks of a river ? at Madrid's Polytechnic University. If it's approved by a jury, he'll officially be an architect in October.

Then what? A stroll through the wasteland.

The construction industry was crushed by the implosion of a real estate bubble in 2008. It's ground zero of Spain's economic crisis, with more than 1 million jobs lost in that industry alone.

Rafa, however, keeps on dreaming.

An actor in the university drama troupe, he talks a mile a minute with charm and eloquence, gushing enthusiasm for his chosen profession. He loves his studies so much he'd do it all over again ? despite the doom that hangs over the industry.

Rafa refuses to believe that after a five-year journey through one of Spain's most demanding schools, what awaits him is the edge of a cliff and a plunge into the dead-end jobs in bars or supermarkets that many of his fellow college grads are taking up to get by.

He breaks into this riff: "Since I was little, they told me, 'when you get to middle school, you will fail some subjects.' I did not fail. 'When you get to high school, your grades will go down.' They did not. 'When you get to university, you will fail.' OK, I have failed a few subjects, but I got by. So I do not want to be told again that there is not going to be any work. I simply do not believe it.

"It all depends on me."

Gonzalez is not angry about his plight. He says everybody in Spain is to blame ? consumers hooked on loans, banks that threw around the money, politicians who sat back and watched it all inflate dangerously.

"In the end," he says, "it is all of us at least a little bit."

MOIRA KOFFI, 22

Moira worries if she'll have a job when she gets back from vacation in Greece.

She worries about how she'll live in Paris once she has to leave student housing.

Above all ? following big gains by far-right parties in France, Greece and elsewhere ? the African-French communications grad worries about a racist wave engulfing Europe: "It's like the 1930s again. I don't get why people can recreate this atmosphere of hate and fear. It's crazy."

Moira just handed in her thesis at the Sorbonne, capping three years of study.

She started out as a journalism major, but switched to corporate communications when crisis hit in 2008.

"I wanted to be a journalist, but then I heard about everyone who couldn't find jobs," Moira says.

But by the time she graduated the downturn had expanded, and now half of France's new graduates have no work.

"Can it get any worse?" she says with a wry laugh. "Well, maybe if the European Union explodes."

Moira has had time to come to terms with the crisis. Its start coincided with her move to Paris four years ago. Leaving her widowed mother teaching school in a small town in Normandy, Moira made her way in the capital as countless young students have before her, counting her centimes and enjoying "la vie boheme" ? bohemian life.

The Sorbonne helped her find a short-term apprenticeship at a public relations agency, where she handles social media campaigns.

The four-day-a-week job ends in September. She wants to stay on, but there are no guarantees.

Moira budgets carefully, keeping expenses to around 600 euros ($750) a month. She goes out less than she did when she first moved to Paris, taking up hobbies like dressmaking and baking muffins. Her most recent creation? A "beautiful and classy" black dress. It's nearly finished after six months of work.

LUTZ HENSCHEL, 27

Lutz picks up his diploma in a soaring hall adorned with a sculpture of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. He savors a glass of champagne. Listens to the music.

With a masters in electrical engineering in Germany, Europe's most successful economy, he knows his prospects are brighter than those of millions of other university graduates across the continent.

But since finishing his studies in January, Lutz has sent out nearly 40 applications and been through about 15 interviews, only to keep hitting a brick wall.

"At the beginning I felt disappointed because I believed that I was the reason for the rejections," he says. "But now I think that a lot of companies have too high expectations."

Even facing a shortage of skilled workers, elite German companies have been notoriously unwilling to hire students straight out of university. Lutz sees himself trapped in a Catch-22: "They expect a graduate to have specific knowledge and experiences which I think is impossible to have right after graduation."

The Berlin native who teaches karate on the side dreams of a job in renewable energy.

This month he took a six-hour train journey south for an interview with German engineering giant Bosch.

Two days later, it was an hour-and-a-half train ride north for an interview with a German-Danish company that builds wind farms.

He's confident that the latest interview went well: He got to talk to real engineers, not just HR reps.

"It's a little bit discouraging at first, because everyone is saying, 'you are sought so much, you're an electrical engineer, everyone wants you,'" Lutz says. "But then you get out, and it's not true."

On the eve of the launch of Class of 2012, Lutz's fortunes turn. He sends out this tweet:

"I got my first official job offer! I will stay in Berlin, building elevators."

Developing electric circuits for elevators is a far cry from Lutz's ambition of making the world a better place through green technologies, but it's a start.

"How awesome," he tweets.

WellPoint to buy?rival insurer Amerigroup

By Roland Jones

WellPoint is aiming to profit from the Supreme Court?s recent decision to uphold most of President Barack Obama?s health care law.

The health insurer said Monday it will buy rival Amerigroup for about $4.9 billion in a bid to capture a larger share of the growing number of recipients of the Medicare and Medicaid health care programs.

The deal follows the U.S. Supreme Court?s decision to uphold Obama?s healthcare legislation, which requires all Americans to have health insurance. It is expected to increase the number of Americans who have access to state-sponsored health care programs.

WellPoint said the transaction will, upon completion, allow the combined company to serve more than 4.5 million beneficiaries of these health care programs and allow WellPoint to increase its footprint to 19 states.

In early June WellPoint, which is looking to diversify its sources of revenue, agreed to acquire contact lens retailer 1-800 Contacts from private equity company Fenway Partners.

The Amerigroup acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of 2013 and will be financed with cash, commercial paper and new debt, the companies said.

Amy Senser sentenced to 41 months in hit-and-run death

Amy Senser, the wife of former Minnesota Vikings player Joe Senser, claimed to be deeply remorseful after receiving her 41-month prison sentence for killing Anousone Phanthavong in a hit-and-run accident last year.

"I'm sorry...I hope you can believe me. I never saw your son that night, and if I had, I would have stopped to help him," Senser, 45, told Phanthavong's family at her sentencing Monday.

Senser hugged Phanthavong's mother and told her that she tattooed her late son's name on her wrist.

"We felt a relief to [hear her] actually speak for herself and just hear her apology," said the victim's niece, Cindy Phanthavong.

"All that they've wanted in this criminal proceeding was for justice to be served and they're thankful that that was accomplished," said James Ballentine, attorney for the Phanthavong family.

Senser testified in May that she knew she had hit something on the night of August 23, but said she believed it was a pothole or construction cone. She said she didn't see 38-year-old Phanthavong.

When asked to describe what the feeling of the impact was like, Senser said, "I've never been in an accident so I wasn't quite sure if I'd hit a pothole or one of those construction signs."

Phanthavong, a restaurant cook, was fatally struck by Senser's sport utility vehicle as he refueled his stalled car on an Interstate 94 ramp in Minneapolis.

The highly charged case was taxing on the Senser family as it pitted stepdaughter against stepmother.

Senser's stepdaughter, 28-year-old Brittani Senser, said she forced her stepmother to admit her role in the accident more than a week after the crash. Brittani Senser, an aspiring pop singer, testified that she was angry after media reports linked her to the accident.

Brittani Senser discussed her role in the situation on "Good Morning America" Tuesday. "I don't feel like I forced her," she said. "I was under the impression that my family was in complete compliance with authorities. When the news broke and there wasn't a driver identified [there was] speculation that it could have been any of us. I told them, because I knew ? that she had to take responsibilities for what she'd done."

Amy Senser's defense lawyers countered that Brittani Senser was actually angry that the hit-and-run had caused damage to her career, saying that the 28-year-old was more upset about losing a charity singing gig than about Phanthavong's death.

Brittani Senser also said that she is unsure how truthful her stepmother has been throughout the trial.

"I [do] believe that she is remorseful," she told Robin Roberts on "GMA." "But I kind of believe the judge. It's hard to believe that you didn't know you hit something. I don't know if she knew she'd hit a person. It's hard to believe from the evidence that she didn't know she hit something."

Senser was found guilty in two of three felony counts related to criminal vehicular homicide.

During the trial, Joe Senser lost his cool with the media.

"What channel are you with?" asked Senser. In another outburst, Senser asked members of the media "Why don't you get a life?"

Senser played four years with the Vikings in the early 1980s before a knee injury ended his career. He co-owns Joe Senser's Restaurant and Sports Theater, a Minneapolis-St. Paul-area restaurant chain, and has worked as a Vikings radio color commentator.

Parents of teen lost at sea blame Hawaii tour group

Parents of a New York teen who went missing in the waters off Hawaii blame a tour group for their son's disappearance after a wave swept him out to sea.

The wave pulled Tyler Madoff, 15, out to sea six days ago after a hiking and kayaking expedition with a tour group from Bold Earth Teen Adventures in Hawaii. The 6-foot wave hit the tour group on Kealakekua Bay, sending Tyler and five other teens into the water. The five were rescued, with a 15-year-old boy still recovering in a Honolulu hospital.

The search for Tyler ended Monday evening after fire officials classified his disappearance as a fatality.

His father, Michael Madoff, blamed Bold Earth Teen Adventures after team leaders from the company led the group into the bay even though officials from the Department of Land and Natural Resources warned that they were not allowed to hike or kayak in the area and the group apparently had no permit to be there.

"The people of Bold Earth ... have shown poor judgment and extremely poor character," Madoff said.

He said, however, that there are no plans at this time to take legal action.

Abbott Wallis, the owner of Bold Earth Teen Adventure, said in a statement to ABC News the company did "the very best they could under extremely difficult circumstances."

At a news conference at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa Sunday, Madoff thanked those who searched. "You saved other families from the great sadness we feel. ... You are heroes," he said.

A junior at Scarsdale High School in Westchester County, Tyler played outside linebacker for the varsity football team. He won a state medal for the Pelham Community Rowing Association. His coaches and friends told ABC News station WABC he was a leader.

"The kids are devastated," coach Andrew Verboys said. "Obviously, the team is devastated, but the one thing they do have is each other."

Friend James Nicholas said, "He's a role model for all of us. He was one of the nicest kids in high school. He cheered everybody up."

Coach Guy Monseair said, "Our hearts go out to the family. I can't imagine their grief, their pain. I do know that we loved Tyler."

Michael Madoff and his wife, Marianne, are back in White Plains with their two other children.

Remembering his son, Madoff said, "You're the best of your mother and you're the best of me. You brought smiles and joy to everybody"

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Pantech Vega S5 does Android 4.0 on a 5-inch LCD, facemask not included

Pantech Vega S5 does Android 40 on a 5inch LCD, facemask not included

The 4.5-inch Vega LTE is not eight months old and the 4.8-inch Vega Racer 2 is still properly wet behind the years. But, the flow of progress abides by no calendars, so welcome the Pantech Vega S5 to the world. It steps up to a full 5-inch IPS LCD with a 720p resolution in a phone that, thanks to a "zero bezel" design, actually has a smaller footprint than the Samsung Galaxy S III. There's a whopping 13 megapixel shooter in there with zero lag, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 16GB of internal storage and a 2,100 mAh battery that's said to deliver 11 hours of talk time. If that sounds like a good combination indeed it could be, but don't spend too much pining -- this handset is destined only for Korean shores.
