Parlor Games with the Family - How Was Your Day

?

Lets play bingo

?

One of the great joys in our family is Parlor games.? We like board games, card games,? and trivia.? At every family get together, we end up playing for hours on end.? Sometimes I think it?s more to prevent us from fighting and arguing than to inspire family bonding,? But hey, to each their own!

Here are some of our favorites.

1) Card games.? We?re particularly fond of Gin Rummy and Crazy 8s, but can be convinced to play other games as well.? Personally, I like to play Canasta, but it?s a little difficult to keep track of.?

2) Bingo.? This game is easy to play, no matter how many people you have at a gathering or their ages.? For the really little ones, you probably want to match them up with an older team mate.? You can even choose which kind of Bingo you're playing!?

Parcheesi pachisi vintage board game

?

3) Board Games.? I adore Monopoly, but very few people want to play for seemingly days on end.? We tend to stick to games like Life, Parcheesi, and even Backgammon.

4) Trivia Games.? Some of us are a bunch of smarty pants know it all showoffs and the rest of us think we?re smarter than we are.? And then there are the truly special few of us ? those that have a penchant for remembering the most useless of facts.? I happen to fall into the 3rd category.? Sometimes these battles are epic and legendary.?

5) Charades and Pictionary.? I don?t find either of these events particularly enjoyable.? I am really really terrible at drawing.? I almost always blurt out one of the words that I?m acting/drawing.? And, perhaps best of all, I get frustrated really easily with the game.? Someone *ahem* me *ahem* usually ends up crying.? That was passable when I was a kid, but as an adult, it?s not such a good thing.?

What kind of games do you & your family play?? We're always looking for a new one to add into our mix.

South Sudan: Full oil production could take 1 year

(AP) ? South Sudan says it will up to a year to restart full oil production in some of its oil fields due to damage done by Sudanese forces during clashes last in April.

Speaking Thursday, South Sudanese Minister of Petroleum and Mining Stephen Dhieu Dau said assessments are being conducted by teams from the ministry and oil operators in the country to determine exactly how long it will take to resume pumping oil. All of South Sudan's oil is produced in Unity and Upper Nile states, along the border with Sudan.

According to the Minister, Upper Nile's well could take four to six months to resume full production, while the Unity field could take between ten and twelve months.

Wall Street up after housing data; volume lowest of year

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks edged higher on Wednesday in the lightest trading of the year as investors waited for a key speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on Friday.

Daily volume this week has been very low, even for a seasonally slow period, with the market recording three of the four lowest volume full sessions of 2012. The low volume reflected investors' reluctance to place big bets before Bernanke's speech.

What little excitement there was came from data showing pending home sales rose 2.4 percent in July, a bigger gain than expected, according to the National Association of Realtors. An index of housing shares <.hgx> was up 0.5 percent.

"We're seeing consistently good numbers out of the housing market. It's hard to get too negative on the U.S. economy with the housing market doing better than expected," said Paul Zemsky, chief investment officer of Multi-Asset Strategies at ING Investment Management in New York.

"I think the U.S. is doing pretty well today, given what the rest of the world has done," he said. The Shanghai Composite index <.ssec> hit its lowest close since February 2009, while the S&P 500 is trading near a four-year high.

Bernanke addresses a conference of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and could announce new measures to boost growth. He is expected to stoke expectations for a third round of quantitative easing, though he may not detail the timing of the Fed's action.

Volume traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the Amex, was 4.41 billion shares compared with the previous low on Monday of 4.46 billion. The year-to-date average is about 6.6 billion.

Shares of customer reviews website Yelp Inc jumped 22.5 percent to $22.37 in a bit of a surprise for investors as it was the day insiders were free to sell their holdings.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> inched up 4.49 points, or 0.03 percent, to 13,107.48. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> rose 1.19 points, or 0.08 percent, to 1,410.49. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> gained 4.04 points, or 0.13 percent, to 3,081.19.

The S&P dipped in the last two sessions, but the decline was less than 0.1 percent on both days. It hasn't closed with a 1 percent move in either direction since August 3.

The index has been pinned in a fairly tight range over the last three weeks, finding support at 1,400 while also unable to convincingly pierce the April high of 1,422.38, which has acted as a resistance point.

Investors are also focusing on the European Central Bank's meeting set for September 6 and a host of U.S. economic data scheduled for next week, including the Labor Department's payrolls report for August.

Wednesday's U.S. data included gross domestic product, which grew a revised 1.7 percent in the second quarter. The government figure was in line with economists' expectations and up from last month's government estimate of 1.5 percent gain.

The Fed said in its Beige Book that the U.S. economy continued to grow gradually in July and early August but that manufacturing activity was softening.

WellPoint Inc Chief Executive Angela Braly abruptly stepped down late Tuesday following growing investor dissatisfaction with the health insurer's financial performance. Shares rose 7.7 percent to $61.80.

Advancers outpaced decliners on the NYSE by about 17 to 11 and on the Nasdaq by about 7 to 5.

Officials: 8 killed in airstrike in east Yemen

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Military officials say an airstrike has hit a vehicle carrying suspected militants traveling in eastern Yemen, killing eight in the third such strike this week.

The officials said the attack Friday targeted the vehicle in Hadramawt in eastern Yemen. One official said the attack was carried out by a U.S. drone. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.

The U.S. considers the local al-Qaida branch the world's most active and has used drones in the past to go after its members. Seven other suspected militants have been killed in airstrikes in the area since Tuesday.

Yemen's government has intensified its campaign against militant groups, backed by U.S. advice and logistical support. Militants have carried out several attacks in retaliation.

MEN-FACTOR: Gay Marriage ? The Blind Being Pissed Off by the ...

Well, people fight, bicker and argue over whether or not gays and lesbians should be allowed to get married. Some people let their tempers flare, others simply show signs that they do not care.

At any rate, what is the real issue behind gay marriage?

Like any issue the mainstream media and government push ? it is a tactic to divide and conquer the American people.

I?ll start out by throwing some tomatoes at our religious leaders

Marriage as according to the bible is not mentioned very often. There is no layout for a ceremony. In fact, according to the bible scholar I spoke to, the only precedence for marriage was for a man to pay a woman?s father a certain amount of money (or goods ? like livestock, grain etc...).

By religious standards ? you needed no license to get married according to the bible.

Why then, if marriage is in fact a religious ceremony, do you need a license to get married in America?? Since when do you need a license in America to practice your religious beliefs?

Any Pat Robertson?s out there want to answer me?

Since when is marriage a legal contract with the government more than a bonding of holy matrimony?

Any Jerry Falwell?s out there got an answer?

Since when does modern day marriage ? something that is more geared towards legal contracts with the government have any more ?sanctity? than a hooker?

Any Joel Olsteen?s out there got an answer for me?

Now, let?s throw some tomatoes at the Gay and Lesbian community:

Are you people stupid?? Do you have eyes?

Have you seen what the institution of marriage has done for heterosexual relationships in this country? It has made a complete disaster of them. 87% of marriages end in divorce ? legal fees, economic ruin etc?

And the gays and lesbians out there want to fight for their right to gleefully jump into this bottomless pit of hell fire with the heterosexuals???

WTF is wrong with you people?!?!

It seems to me, that gays and lesbians should be walking around with sh*t eating grins on their faces ? glad to tears that they do not have to get the government involved in their relationships ? and nor will they be pressured to do so by their partners since they cannot in the first place.

So ? ultimately, what does the issue of gay marriage boil down to?

Keeping people blind to the fact that the government has already taken over it.

And the government using it against the American people ? in this case ? as a divide and conquer tactic by throwing gays in to stir up a hornet?s nest.

So my fellow Americans - keep bickering, keep arguing and keep fighting to let the government have control over your relationships and your money.

In other words - keep acting like fools.

Have a nice day...FOOOLS!!!!

Advice For Buying Real Estate You Cannot Live Without

Regardless of the price range you are looking at for your real estate, you will want to understand the essentials of the transaction as a buyer of real estate. The tips contained in the article below will shed light on a few methods you can use to make great real estate purchases.

It really is a buyer?s market when it comes to real estate. Property values are now at a low since the market has crashed. When buying a house for your personal use, research the real estate market in your area and use a qualified local agent. If you keep your property long enough, you are sure to gain a profit.

When you officially decide to purchase a home, don?t forget all the other options that are available. Finding the ideal property that falls within your strategy, and satisfies your goals can be time consuming.

TIP! Go online and search the sex offender registry in the area of any home you are thinking about buying. Even though data on sex offenders is publicly available, don?t be so sure that real estate agents and home sellers will feel obligated to give this information to potential buyers.

See if your Realtor can provide a checklist. There are many Realtors that have a checklist like this already prepared. It covers the entire home-buying process, from choosing a house to getting a loan. A checklist will keep you organized and allow you to measure your progress.

You are going to need to make sure that you check out the neighborhood before considering purchase of a home. If the home is not going to suit your needs, then the purchase will be a long term disappointment to you. Your neighborhood will greatly impact your lifestyle because that will be where you meet people, shop, and engage in many of the social events that you will participate in.

Buy your dream house. While many investors say now might not be the ideal time to sell or buy a larger home, others disagree. This could be the perfect time to buy your ideal property, rather than wait and take a chance that prices might go higher.

TIP! Even if the home is just for you, don?t go it alone. It is always helpful to have an experienced person at hand.

Do not rush into purchasing real estate without doing your homework. A lot of people will jump into a purchase before they fully understand the market. So, before buying any property, make sure that you find out about the surrounding area, the local crime rate, the age of the property, etc.

Set aside a fund for unexpected expenses linked to the new property. Real estate buyers generally take into account only the amount of the down payment, relevant taxes that will be charged, and funds needed by the bank when determining closing costs. However, there are almost always local fees and other costs that can hit buyers unexpectedly. These will vary by location.

You should put off a home purchase if you have any uncertainty about your current job or employment outlook. Once your signature is on the dotted line, you?ve agreed to be responsible for the monthly payment, regardless of your circumstances. Life can be unpredictable, so it is important that you have enough money set aside to carry your mortgage payments for at least a few months, in the event that you become unemployed or need to take an unpaid leave from work.

TIP! It is absolutely necessary that you research a home?s neighborhood before you invest in a home. The neighborhood is as important as the home itself, so make sure it fits your lifestyle.

When you decide to purchase real estate, you will want to educate yourself as a buyer in order to avoid expensive mistakes. Learning about the real estate market that you are considering making a purchase in is an effective way of approaching your purchase as a well-informed consumer. The above article has given you a variety of ways to use this information in a positive way. All you have left to do is use the information you?ve learned.

Google+ now has birthday reminders, too

9 hrs.

Many find Facebook's birthday reminders silly. Either they're overlooked entirely or lead to a post attack that clutters up someone's Wall (or Timeline). The folks behind Google+, on the other hand,?might've just?figured out how to make birthday reminders better (or?less annoying, at least).

Irene Chung, one of Google's software engineers, had the honor of introducing the social network's new birthday reminder?feature in a Google+ post.

"You?ll see a reminder on Google.com when someone in your [Google+] circles has a birthday," she explains.?This reminder ??an example of which you can see above ??is tough to miss since it lives in the same corner as regular Google+ notifications. It will only be visible to people with whom you've chosen to share your birthday, of course. (You can adjust this setting at https://plus.google.com/up/birthday, writes Chung.)

Unlike Facebook, Google+ doesn't offer a way for people to post something?onto your?page. This means that there won't be any silly messages from people you haven't spoken to since they wished you a happy birthday last year appearing among your own posts. Instead you might see a a couple of?emails or some Google+ posts in which you're tagged.

Now if only you could convince all of your friends to actually use Google+ so that you can properly take advantage of this new feature, you'd be all set.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Study: Workers' Comp Reform Bill Increases Costs $300M - Russo ...

By Don Jergler | August 27, 2012

A workers? compensation reform bill was officially introduced on Monday,?and the same day?the California Workers? Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau issued a study saying the bill could produce a savings of nearly half-a-billion-dollars.

But that savings will be outpaced by benefit increases called for in the bill, increasing system wide costs the tune of $300 million annually, according to WCIRB, which outlined its preliminary costs estimates in a letter?released on Monday.

Senate Bill 863 is authored by state Sen. Kevin DeLeon, D-Los Angeles and coauthored by Sen. Jose Solorio, D-Anaheim, but not? by Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, whose bill on workers? comp liens is being used as a vehicle for the reform language.

Lieu, who chairs the Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee, has reportedly been involved in hammering out the proposal. However, he begged out as the bill?s author because he already has a lot on his plate, a Lieu spokesman said.

The bill comes from talks between labor and a handful of large, self-insured employers, which have been reportedly ongoing since October. With this year?s legislative session winding down, lawmakers will have about a week to review and vote on a 100-plus-page bill that contains roughly 60,000 words.

The two groups had come up with?the proposal, which has been circulating?in various forms for the past two weeks,?which was intended as an attempt to fulfill the the need for roughly $700 million in additional permanent disability benefits for injured workers, and $1.4 billion in system wide savings.

Christine Baker, director of the Department of Industrial Relations, who was reportedly involved in negotiations and has backed the proposal, indicated further reforms to the bill could be made in coming days.

?WCIRB data is now available and is being released to advise the public of information pertaining to costs and savings through a proposal to bring comprehensive reform California?s workers? compensation,? Baker said in a statement. ?The reform proposal will be carried in SB 863, introduced by Senator DeLeon and co-authored by Assembly member Solorio. While this information is being made publically available, reform discussions continue in an effort to find the best solution to protect employees while preventing increases in the cost of doing business in the state.?

Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones in a statement expressed concerned about rising costs in the system.

?The analysis by the WCIRB indicates that SB 863 has cost savings that significantly offset the costs of providing needed increases of permanent disability benefits for California?s injured workers,? Jones said.? ?I remain concerned about continued rising costs in the system, however, particularly medical costs and the expenses to adjust workers? compensation claims, and encourage all stakeholders to look for additional ways to reduce system costs.?

WCIRB in a letter to Jones and Baker dated Aug. 24 outlined areas in which the bureau was able to produce cost estimates:

?Among the areas impacted by the proposed amendments for which the WCIRB was able to provide a preliminary cost analysis are permanent disability (PD) minimum and maximum weekly benefit levels, the burial allowance, supplemental job displacement benefits, the adjustments to the PD rating corresponding to future earning capacity (FEC), permanent disability impairment ?add-ons? for psychiatric impairment, sleep disorders or sexual dysfunction, the three-tiered system of PD weekly benefits based on return to work status, the rate at which PD benefits are paid, liens, reimbursements for spinal implant hardware, fee schedule values for ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) and the process for resolving medical treatment disputes.?

WCIRB in its letter identified an overall cost reduction of roughly $400 million, which it said was based on an estimated statewide cost of indemnity and medical losses and loss adjustment expenses of $19 billion on injuries occurring in 2013. That 2013 estimate is based on the estimated cost of indemnity and medical losses and loss adjustment expenses as reflected in WCIRB?s Jan. 1, 2013 rate filing.

However, the increased permanent disability benefit provisions effective on injuries occurring on or after Jan. 1, 2014 are estimated to increase total costs by $700 million in 2014.

Therefor the proposed legislation will increase total system costs by $300 million annually, according to WCIRB?s estimates.

The estimates in the letter do not provide figures for areas such as medical provider networks (MPNs), admissibility of medical reports completed outside a valid MPN, home health services and permanent disability advances.

A spokesman for WCIRB said the bureau would examine the figures further and provide better estimates if the bill is passed.

The American Insurance Association weighed in on the bill. ?Marjorie Berte, AIA?s Western regional vice president, pointed out anticipated rising costs will outpace savings figured into the bill.

?Much work went into the bill?s development,? Berte said in a statement. ?However, the expectation by proponents that savings would be twice the cost of benefit increases is now dashed by preliminary estimates released today by the Workers? Compensation Inspection & Rating Bureau (WCIRB).? The WCIRB concludes that while claim frequency utilization costs will decrease by $400 million on an annual basis, permanent disability benefit costs will increase by $700 million?adding $300 million annually in new costs to the system beginning in 2014.?Expectations of net savings of two to one are now put at a net cost increase of 1.4 percent annually.?

Board Games Equal Quality Family Time | Millionaire Business Articles

?

By Christine George

In today?s fast-paced world, it?s too easy for your family to come home after long days at work and school simply to plug into their computers or the television. Many families hardly even find the time to eat together, and when they do they spend much of their time texting. It?s important to set aside time for the family. When you?re all focused on one activity together, you will bond and relax at the same time. One option that can bring the whole family together is with family board games.

Board games are a classic form of entertainment, and because there is such a wide range of board games to choose from, you can ensure that you?ll find something that is entertaining for the whole family. You can choose family board games which can be completed in less than half an hour if everyone is busy with homework, or you could choose a longer game that will take up the better part of a lazy, rainy afternoon. Be sure to look at the intended ages and skill level of board games to find something that?s age-appropriate for your family, so that they don?t get frustrated.

Some family board games are based almost entirely on luck or chance, such as those which are played with the roll of the dice. Others will require strategy and skill to complete. These are considered to be good for children, because they encourage critical, strategic thinking. This makes them a healthier activity than plugging into computer games instead. While you play together as a family, you can get competitive as you wish, or spend the time to talk about your days in between rounds of the game. There?s nothing better than spending time together over a friendly round of games as a family.

Online, you?ll find a range of different family board games to choose from. Chess is one of the most timeless and classic games to play, while a wooden or marble chess set makes a timeless piece of decoration as well. Mahjong is a Chinese game which involves skill, calculation, and strategy. It is usually played by four players, making it perfect for family board game night. Backgammon is another board game which is available, involving both luck and strategy for an entertaining experience. These are family classics which have been played for centuries, and continue to delight players of all ages to this day.

Wall Street little changed in thin trade after mixed data

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks were little changed in light trading on Tuesday as mixed data gave investors little indication whether Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke might signal more economic stimulus from the Fed when he speaks on Friday.

Bernanke is scheduled to address a conference of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and market participants are waiting to see whether he will announce new measures to boost growth. The Fed chairman is expected to feed expectations for a third round of quantitative easing, though he could keep markets guessing about the timing.

Expectations for more stimulus have risen along with signs of slowing global growth. Japan cut its assessment of its economic expansion, citing a deceleration in U.S. and Chinese demand for its exports.

U.S. consumer confidence unexpectedly weakened in August to its lowest in nine months as Americans turned more pessimistic about the short-term outlook, according to the Conference Board.

But in another report, the S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas showed U.S. home prices rose for a fifth consecutive month.

"A mixed bag of economic indicators that sort of point downward; we are all hopeful this leaves some room for the Fed to shower money on us," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer, Harris Private Bank in Chicago.

"Unfortunately a fair amount of stimulus is probably priced in, so we are at a period now where bad news is good news until we hear what (Bernanke) is actually going to do."

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> added 5.23 points, or 0.04 percent, to 13,129.90. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> gained 1.51 points, or 0.11 percent, to 1,411.95. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> rose 7.63 points, or 0.25 percent, to 3,080.82.

A day after the lightest volume of the year, trading was again thin. Some 2.3 billion shares were traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq halfway through Tuesday's session. The average daily volume has been 6.56 billion shares traded.

"It's typical late August. Everybody fled, no one gives a darn, volume is low, anything that happens is maybe a little more exaggerated than it should be," said Cummins Catherwood, managing director at Boenning and Scattergood in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.

"Maybe there will be an inflection point on Friday, but chances are there may not be anybody there to pay attention to it."

The S&P 500 has been pinned in a fairly tight range over the last three weeks, finding a support level at 1,400 while also unable to convincingly pierce the April high of 1,422.38, which has acted as a resistance point. The index has been unable to muster a move of at least 1 percent in either direction since August 3.

Lexmark International Inc surged 15.9 percent to $22.04 as the biggest percentage gainer on the S&P 500 after it said it would stop making inkjet printers, cut about 1,700 jobs, and focus on its more profitable imaging and software businesses. The NYSEArca computer hardware index <.hwi> rose 1.4 percent.

PVH Corp raised its full-year earnings outlook for the third time this year as it expects its European business to grow and its flagship Tommy Hilfiger brand to remain popular with shoppers. Shares climbed 5.7 percent to $93.52.

Movado Group Inc was up 16.9 percent to $35.19 after hitting an all-time high of $36.11. The watchmaker reported a higher second-quarter profit and raised its full-year earnings forecast for the second time.

Making The Most Of Your Advertising Efforts Through Social Media ...

It often can be difficult to approach social media marketing and find new and innovative ways to market your niche. Thankfully, social media allows businesses to reach a greater number of customers than ever before. What follows are a few suggestions to get you started using social media.

Take advantage of existing advertising on social media outlets. Not only is it relatively inexpensive, it is targeted towards specific keywords that users post in their profiles. Some different social sites offer this type of targeted advertising that can help you reach your target audience.

Your ultimate goal is to sell things, but you have to keep other things in mind as well. The idea should be to develop an entire identity online. Social media requires more than a strict business-minded approach. Getting involved with the internet community will get you a larger business network. You will increase your business by doing so.

Social Media

Use many social media sites when marketing. Although Facebook is used by many people, you should also ?diversify? your social media marketing to include other social media networks such as MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and others. The more exposure the more chance of marketing success.

When you are writing blog posts for your company on any social media site, it is a good idea to update it constantly. Establish and maintain a posting schedule. By regularly updating your content, people will want to keep coming back. Give yourself a reminder before it?s time to write a new entry on your blog.

Keep your Facebook profile updated. Pay attention to questions or comments posted on your wall. Promptly address concerns or questions and speak with people on your page. Your customers will feel more connected to your company if you respond promptly to their concerns.

Answer questions and reply to comments on social media marketing websites. Log into your sites multiple times per day, and be sure to review all notifications. You might also opt-in to daily or individual notifications, which can be sent to your inbox each time someone posts a comment or question. Keep in mind that anything you post in reply to a comment will be visible by all.

If you don?t know what to write about, have a survey or poll. Your followers can select a topic relevant to your niche or provide their own suggestions. This exercise should spawn a myriad of ideas for interesting content.

Allow customers to rate, comment and sort your items. Giving your visitors these tools enables them to participate in the process.

Provide incentives, but do not be too pushy. People do not like feeling pushed into buying something. Share quality content related to your industry and talk about your new products or share coupon codes once a week. This allows you to offer discounts without your customers feeling coerced or spammed.

Put subscription buttons on social media profiles, if your company has an RSS feed. This way, all of your blog followers can access your social networking sites. People who become familiar with you will have an easier time to stick by you wherever you wind up on the Internet.

Social Media

Your social media friends can get deals others cannot. Grab your customers with a unique post. For instance, launch a contest via social media. If this is not up your alley, offer a special deal if they choose to follow you. You can also limit your announcements to your social networks.

Use these strategies to succeed in SMM. If you use them to the fullest, you can leave your competitors in the dust. As you become more proficient, you will gain more customers.

Hot Chocolate! - Organic Food, Organic Food Consultant, Organic ...

A recent report by Reuters challenged the assumption that chocolate is a recession-proof treat that consumers continue to buy despite the grim economic outlook. Analysts said worsening economic conditions in the euro zone had prompted a sharp slowdown in European demand for chocolate. In Switzerland, the world?s top chocolate consumer, domestic chocolate consumption dropped about 8 percent by volume in the first four months of the year. In Germany, one of the world?s largest chocolate consumers, retail sales of chocolate bars fell 7.3 percent on the year in the first four months of 2012.

Thankfully fine chocolate in the UK does not appear to be affected by the same pressures. Fine chocolate is generally regarded as chocolate made from beans grown in countries such as the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Peru, Venezeula and Madagascar. Cocoa from these countries sells at higher prices than beans from origins such as West Africa. The premium is exacerbated by economies of scale: mainstream chocolate is made on an industrial scale whereas fine chocolate is made in small batches, which inevitably costs more.

The good news is that the UK fine chocolate market is growing in leaps and bounds so higher prices do not appear be deterring ever-increasing numbers of consumers seeking out better quality chocolate.? Supermarkets have spotted an opportunity and upgraded the quality of their own-label bars so that it is possible to find good quality, high cocoa solid bars at very competitive prices. However the supermarkets are very much following the trend set by small innovative brands and the retailers who stock them.

We can summarise current trends in fine chocolate as ?The Three Ds?:? Dark, Designated Origin and Direct Sourcing.? Gone are the days when milk chocolate dominated the UK?s palates: the sterling work done by Green & Black?s and Lindt over the past ten years has paid off so that the balance is rapidly tipping towards dark. One reason for this is the ?health halo? on dark chocolate. In July Barry Callebaut AG won the backing of the European Food Safety Authority for its claim that cocoa flavonols can be good for blood circulation. Designated Origin allows consumers to appreciate how where and how cocoa beans are grown influence the flavour of the finished chocolate: what French wine-makers refer to as terroire. Direct Sourcing is a new concept. Now that there are so many onpack certification schemes ? organic, Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, Utz and more ? emphasis is shifting to companies who have a direct relationship with the farmers whose cocoa beans they use.

Divine have a unique position here as they are 45% owned by the Ghanian farming co-operative Kuapa Kokoo. The farmers have direct influence over how the company is run and share in the profits from the chocolate. Their Christmas launches build on the success of the current range. Explained Rosanna Mayhew ?our new Ginger Thins will appeal to the adventurous foodie ? they go along with our existing Mint Thins but are more of a daring option! To appeal for the stocking filler market we have also launched Christmas tree shaped chocolates ? one milk, one dark, and one white chocolate.?

Another company with a similar ethos is relative newcomer GO*DO (it means ?pleasure? in Italian), who buy cocoa beans direct from organic farming groups in the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Peru. GO*DO embody another growing trend: affordable indulgence. Using a 35g bar size keeps down calories (195 per bar) and rsp (?0.85). Bar flavours are all very Italian ? Dark, Milk, Almond,? Hazelnut,? Espresso and Vanilla. Top Sante magazine were impressed, calling GO*DO ??our favourite choccie treat?.

Green & Black?s agree that provenance and sustainable sourcing are becoming ever more significant. Monika Skrzypczak commented ?Christmas 2012 for fine chocolate will be about products that provide value outside of price.? Playing alongside an increasingly price competitive grocery sector, the fine foods channel has a unique opportunity to showcase premium through products that add value, be it tasting notes that complement the Green & Black?s Tasting Collection, or through exciting displays that signpost our Premium credentials?.

A different approach has been taken by Montezuma?s, who over the summer launched a range based on the ?Great British Pudding?. Flavours included Eton Mess, Spotted Dick, Apple Crumble and Lemon Meringue. Suitably patriotic packaging reinforced the quirky Britishness of the bars. A similar approach could work well at Christmas.

Another specialist brand doing well is Booja Booja. They have recently won three Organic Food Awards as well as two Great Taste Awards, including Three Stars for their Hazelnut Crunch truffles. Laura Herrell pointed out another reason for their success. ?Free From is now one of the most rapidly growing sectors in the Grocery trade and has moved from being a niche to an essential part of any fine food retailers range. Our dairy free chocolate truffles are a source of great delight to people who realise that they can still enjoy extraordinarily delicious treats without suffering negative health effects. ?As the country?s leading manufacturer of fine dairy free, gluten free chocolates our attention is now firmly fixed on ensuring that we are able to supply our customers what they want, whenever they want it, in the run up to Christmas.? Truffles work for Monty Bojangles too, with sales reaching 40 packs per store per week during December.

The world of Fine Chocolate may not be totally insulated from the current economic downturn but at least in the UK specialist chocolatiers and retailers appear in rude health as we head towards Christmas. More dedicated chocolate brands will launch at the Speciality and Fine Food Fair, now with its own Speciality Chocolate Fair. And Chocolate Week 2012 is stuffed full of chocolate-infused events including consumer show Chocolate Unwrapped, this year at a prestigious Covent Garden venue.

I?m dreaming of a Dark Christmas?

Mitt Romney vs fact-checkers: the welfare law dispute

Mitt Romney's campaign continues to claim that Obama removed the work requirement from the welfare law, despite refutations from fact-checkers and respected newspapers.

By Robert Reich,?Guest blogger / August 29, 2012

In this Aug. 25 photo, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks as vice presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., listens during a campaign rally in Powell, Ohio. According to Reich, Romney's campaign continues to claim that President Obama removed the work requirement from welfare, even though a dozen fact-checking organizations and websites say it isn't true.

A half dozen fact-checking organizations and websites have refuted Romney?s claims that Obama removed the work requirement from the welfare law and will cut Medicare benefits by $216 billion.

?
Last Sunday?s New York Times even reported on its front page that Romney has been ?falsely charging? President Obama with removing the work requirement. Those are strong words from the venerable Times. Yet Romney is still making the false charge. Ads containing it continue to be aired.

Presumably the Romney campaign continues its false claims because they?re effective. But this raises a more basic question: How can they remain effective when they?ve been so overwhelmingly discredited by the media?

The answer is the Republican Party has developed three means of bypassing the mainstream media and its fact-checkers.

The first is by repeating big lies so often in TV spots ? financed by a mountain of campaign money ? that the public can no longer recall (if it ever knew) that the mainstream media and its fact-checkers have found them to be lies.

The second is by discrediting the mainstream media ? asserting it?s run by ?liberal elites? that can?t be trusted to tell the truth. ?I am tired of the elite media protecting Barack Obama by attacking Republicans,? Newt Gingrich charged at a Republican debate last January, in what?s become a standard GOP attack line.
The third is by using its own misinformation outlets ? led by Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and his yell-radio imitators, book publisher Regnery, and the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal, along with a right-wing blogosphere ? to spread the lies, or at least spread doubt about what?s true.

Together, these three mechanisms are creating a parallel Republican universe of Orwellian dimension ? where anything can be asserted, where pollsters and political advisers are free to create whatever concoction of lies will help elect their candidate, and where ?fact-checkers? are as irrelevant and intrusive as is the truth.

Democracy cannot thrive in such a place. To the contrary, history teaches that this is where demagogues take root.
The Romney campaign has decided it won?t be dictated by fact-checkers. But a society without trusted arbiters of what is true and what is false is vulnerable to every lie imaginable.

How to Use Customer Service to Refine Your Buyer Persona

How to Use Customer Service to Refine Your Buyer Persona:from?Software Advice Articles?
HubSpot published an article recently advocating that marketing teams leverage customer service to refine buyer personas. Author Pamela Vaughan argued that since service reps talk to customers all day, they possess insights that could help refine these hypothetical target customer profiles.
I thought this was a really interesting concept. The buyer persona defines what the potential customer values, wants, fears, and objects to when they shop for your product. So,?Vaughan postulates that behaviors expressed during the usage phase of the customer life cycle ? when consumers interact with support ? reveal traits relevant to buyer motivation.
Here are three ways I discovered that brands can use frontline customer service employees to refine buyer personas.

Identifying Preferred Communication Channels

Companies develop buyer personas, in part, to tailor marketing content to unique groups of target customers.
For example, HubSpot customer Goodbye Crutches created a ?Gerry the Great Grandparent? persona. He is most worried about how easy the company?s scooter?a crutch alternative?is to assemble and carry. So, the company targets Gerry with information about how the scooter sets up in minutes and is lightweight and portable.
Gerry?s concerns were identified through sales interactions and customer interviews, but the company learned one useful point from customer service that was added to his persona: his communication channel of choice. When Gerry needs help, he rarely emails or tries self-service tools. He almost exclusively calls. This told marketing that Gerry prefers personal contact.
This simple insight influences how the company interacts with Gerry in all phases of the customer lifecycle, from lead nurturing to post-sale service. ?We know that when we follow up with Gerry, we should do it over the phone,? Goodbye Crutches founder and owner Tom Schwab tells me.

Prioritizing Marketing Spend

Schwab says his agents tag every caller with a corresponding persona?Andy the Athlete, Mary the Motivated Mom, and so on.
This allows his team to assess which personas account for the most support calls. How often does each persona call? How long does each call last? Depending on what percent of sales that persona contributes, the company might decrease marketing investments for that profile if spend exceeds customer support costs.

Sample buyer persona that HubSpot helped create with Goodbye Crutches. The persona should answer questions about what motivates the customer when they make a purchase.

HubSpot uses the same strategy to prioritize their marketing spend.
?In the early days of HubSpot, we sold everything to everyone. After some analysis of our best customers, and seeing the support load for different types of customers, we identified our best target persona and zeroed in on that one,? says Ellie Mirman, head of marketing for HubSpot?s mid-sized business segment.

Determining Technical Savvy

HubSpot client support reps tag each service interaction with a ?question type.? Through this process, the company has learned that small companies tend to call and ask a lot of questions about what they should do with inbound marketing software. In contrast, enterprise buyers typically use the self-service knowledge base for functionality-related questions.
Both of these question types and the mode they used to find the answer reveals the buyer personas? technical savvy. In response, marketing creates more how-to content and guides for small business customers, and more product documentation for enterprise customers.

Customer Support Helps, But It?s Only Part of the Persona

These examples illustrate how customer service can help refine the way companies communicate with buyer personas. But this is only part of the picture. Essential questions to creating the buyer persona typically arise (and matter) in the evaluation phase of the customer lifecycle.
?If you start assuming customer problems revealed during [product] usage are in response to unmet expectations from when they purchased, that can lead you down the wrong path,? says Adele Revella of Buyer Persona Institute Inc. and author of The Buyer Persona Manifesto.
But Revella agreed it?s worth exploring whether customer service can provide some valuable contributions, such as those mentioned above.?Have you used customer service to create or refine buyer personas? How? Let us know by commenting here.

Top donors, lobbyists to schmooze with RNC guests

(AP) ? Away from the televised political speeches and Mitt Romney's nomination at the Republican National Convention, energy, technology, transportation companies and others are hosting lavish parties for Republican leaders, politicians and Romney's top donors.

The behind-the-scenes parties, receptions and other exclusive events allow the Republican elite to mingle with donors and special interests in a way that's unusual even for the nation's capital. Dozens of events and scores of donors, lobbyists and corporate heads are all under one roof this week ? and under a loosely regulated setting distant from Washington.

That's as voters, who have long bristled at how special interests influence policymakers, will see only scripted, primetime speeches and Romney's acceptance remarks from their living rooms.

The influence of money in politics has received heightened scrutiny this election, as independent political groups have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to support their favored candidates. This is the first convention that will highlight the impact of these groups, including the presence of top GOP strategist Karl Rove of the "super" political committee American Crossroads.

The parties begin anew next week in Charlotte, N.C., home to the Democrats' national convention. The DNC said its gathering would be the first not to rely on special-interest money, although its organizers quietly set up a nonprofit entity to collect corporate cash.

Democratic donors complained early in President Barack Obama's administration that they were kept at arm's length. Since then, the president has opened his White House to contributors for events like state dinners and meetings with policy advisers.

Republican delegates this week will be starting their days with muffins, fresh fruit and egg sandwiches at receptions with company sponsorships. At one event Monday afternoon, delegates raved about hors d'oeuvres like truffles and caviar, along with champagne.

Attendees had a wide swatch of events to choose from: a Kid Rock concert on Wednesday, a "Back to the Reagan '80s" reception on Thursday by the Americans for Tax Reform Foundation or a "Wheels Up" party on Friday hosted in part by the National Energy Institute and Citizens United, the conservative organization behind the namesake 2010 Supreme Court case that loosened restrictions on money in politics.

As well, corporations with business before the federal government ? including those with major financial interests at stake ? are throwing their own events for delegates and attendees. In some cases, the parties blend the agendas of both corporate and media hosts that have some symbiotic interests in Washington's halls of power.

Among those sponsoring events in Tampa are Anheuser-Busch, the St. Louis-based producer of Budweiser and other beer brands; pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. and the Lifetime Television Network. Elliott Management Corp. hedge fund co-founder Paul Singer, who gave $1 million to a super PAC backing Romney, is also co-sponsoring an event aimed at gay Republicans.

Another host is the Personal Care Products Council, sponsor of a "Cocktail and Cosmetics" reception. One of the council's members is Utah-based Nu Skin Enterprises, a personal care and dietary supplements firm whose vice chairman, Steven J. Lund, was linked to $2 million in donations to the same Romney-leaning super PAC, Restore Our Future.

A "Nightly Lounge" scheduled all week in Tampa is hosted by Politico, the Washington-focused web news operation. The events, which will also be held at the Democratic convention next week, are co-sponsored by defense industry giant BAE Systems, technology designer Intel Corp., liquor seller Diageo and the Coca-Cola Co.

Politico is trying to deepen its news and politics coverage and win more customers for its specialized subscription services. Politico's executive director of events, Beth Lester Sidhu, said the parties were conceived as a "live extension of our journalistic mission."

BAE Systems Inc. was ranked by the General Services Administration as the 10th largest defense contractor in 2011 with $6.8 billion in awards ? a rank undiminished even after its British parent firm agreed to pay $79 million in fines that same year for civil arms export violations. Just last week, the firm won back nearly the same amount ? $78 million? for a new government contract to produce platforms for U.S. ship-based vertical launching missile systems.

Intel, the multinational semiconductor chip firm based in Silicon Valley, has spent $1.7 million already this year on lobbying in the Senate and House in favor of lowering the corporate tax rate and backing the Trans Pacific Partnership free trade agreement and for removing caps on foreign workers' visas.

"The policy debates that go on are really important to American businesses," Intel spokeswoman Lisa Malloy said. "These are important issues and they really impact our business and we really wanted to be in the middle of it."

British-based Diageo, owner of Captain Morgan rum and other liquor items, spent $1.07 million this year lobbying ? partly to keep in place tax breaks for spirits shipped to the U.S. from the U.S. Virgin Islands. And Coca-Cola has spent more than $2.8 million in lobbying this year, pressing for soft drinks to be kept at school cafeterias and to lower corporate tax rates, and opposing laws that would tax beverages to pay for waste water treatment.

A Coca Cola spokeswoman, Nancy Carlson Bailey, said the firm's role was "primarily focused on supporting the respective host committees."

Elsewhere at the convention, the Arkansas GOP delegation was feted to a welcome dinner at a renowned Cuban restaurant in nearby Ybor City. Former Arkansas governor and presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee stopped by, as did representatives of retail giant Wal-Mart, headquartered in the state. Chevron was behind a Mississippi delegation event Monday, where members of Congress and former Gov. Haley Barbour made appearances.

Tropical Storm Isaac, which led Republicans to cancel their Monday convention session, prompted changes in some events but not others. Tuesday's planned panel discussion on "The Millennial Impact on the Youth Vote" was cancelled while a related cocktail reception went on as planned.

Since touching down in Tampa, Wisconsin delegate Jeff Johns has had a full plate of social events. There have been country club luncheons, a welcome event organized by the convention host committee and gatherings featuring prominent officials and staged by companies with hometown connections like Miller-Coors.

"All the VIPS are in the room. You get to mingle with them," Johns said Monday. "Here it's like going out with your college friends to a tavern ? except there's a lot of free Miller beer."
