While they won?t be playing for Canada in next month?s FIBA Americas tournament in Venezuela, give this country?s two newest NBA players credit for showing up.
No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett and No. 13 selection Kelly Olynyk are in Toronto for this week?s Canada Basketball camp, lending whatever they can to the group of players assembled.
?It?s tough ? I always wanted to play, especially with (this) great group of guys,? said Bennett after watching practice at the Air Canada Centre on Friday. Bennett is still recovering from a shoulder injury, and with Olynyk on the shelf as well, their respective pro teams in Cleveland and Boston would have likely had serious reservations if the frontcourt players had suited up in the maple leaf.
?Everyone wants to be here,? said Olynyk. ?It?s really nice to see that everyone is so keen to represent their country and do it as a team.?

Nvidia
The Shield uses the Android operating system.
One of the biggest surprises from this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas came when Nvidia, a tech company primarily known for its powerhouse graphics processing units and chipsets, revealed?it was making a full-fledged mobile gaming device of its own to stand alongside the many devices that Nvidia's technology already powers.
After a slight name change, a month's delay and drop in price from $349 to $299, the Nvidia Shield hit store shelves this week. But what is Shield, exactly?
"We don?t consider Shield a console," Bryan Del Rizzo, Nvidia senior PR manager of consumer products, explained when I first emailed him inquiring about what I thought was a new mobile gaming console through-and-through. "It?s a mobile Android gaming platform that also is able to stream PC games."
The idea behind Shield was to create something that sits on the border between high-end PC gaming and its mobile counterpart on Android, so the Nvidia Shield is a mish-mash of different elements.
On one hand, it's a fancy Android platform with a gaming controller attached to it. On the other, it's a device that can interact with a PC in a manner similar to how Sony is promising the PlayStation Vita will once the PlayStation 4 comes out ? Shield users, when equipped with the right hardware and in wireless range, can stream games straight from their PC gaming setup to the mobile device.
It's a great idea for anyone who wants to play "Skyrim in bed," as one early reviewer put it. And like Sony's similar promise for cross-play between the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita shows, it's an ambitious idea to bring high-end video game experiences to not-so-high-end devices.
But as with any new emerging technology, there are hiccups along the way. In addition to needing a stable Wi-Fi connection, the streaming part of the Shield's functionality relies on an H.264 encoder that's built into Nvidia's GeForce GTX 650 or higher graphics-card models ? a requirement that could set you back at least another $100 if you don't have one of the company's PC graphics cards, let alone a functioning PC gaming tower in its own right. And the limitations of Wi-Fi range seems to either render this "mobile gaming device's" most promising features inert, or not allow it to be truly "mobile."
Nick Stam, Nvidia's technical marketing director, told NBC News that ideally the device could eventually be set up to stream games from?GRID, its cloud gaming-esque system also unveiled at this year's CES. But for the time being, they're still focused on working out the kinks in the current streaming system.
"Not every game works perfectly," Stam said. "That's why we still have it in beta."
It might seem like a peculiar choice for an established chipmaker to wade into the chaotic and competitive arena of console development. But Nvidia could actually be in a better position than some of its leaner rivals because it doesn't really need to make much money off this device yet.
Piers Harding-Rolls, director of games at market research firm IHS Global Insight, told NBC News that the Shield could basically function as a souped-up business card for Nvidia, helping court fellow gaming companies and mobile gadget makers alike (not to mention average consumers) to its line of graphics cards.
"We expect the platform to be a niche seller at this point," Harding-Rolls wrote in an email to NBC News. "We don't expect it to sell at the level of other handheld consoles, but we don't believe that is necessarily a major issue for Nvidia, as this strategy is as much about provoking interest in Nvidia technology, engaging gamers outside of the PC sector especially in the mobile space and driving brand awareness, as it is generating direct revenue from a handheld console."
But Michael Pachter, a prominent game industry analyst at Wedbush Securities, is less optimistic about the Shield's chances of success.
"I really don?t care about Shield," Pachter wrote when I emailed him asking about the device this week.
"It is not going to sell well at all, reminds me of N-Gage," he added, referring to Nokia's famously hideous flop of an attempt to make a mobile console in 2003.

Wahlberg and Washington in '2 Guns'
It's August. Universal is heading for its third number one opener of the summer as the Denzel Washington/Mark Wahlberg crime actioner "2 Guns" grossed $10 million Friday. That's the lowest number for a top film for a Friday since the pre-summer April 26 first day of "Pain and Gain," but is typical of an August opening. Overall grosses for the top 10 were slightly above the same week a year ago.
Weakening the result is the disappointing domestic take for Sony's "Smurfs 2," $5.5 million yesterday after a Wednesday opening, bringing the three-day total so far of $15 million. The first "Smurfs" movie two years ago grossed $35 million for its initial weekend, above what the sequel will bring in for its first five days. In a summer crammed with family-oriented animated films, this suggests that too much of a good thing is taking its toll--DreamWorks Animation's "Turbo" also came in under expectations. Meantime, Sony is reporting that international openings ("Smurfs" did 75% of its $563 million total in foreign markets) are mostly ahead of the first film, so it seems likely to be modestly profitable for the studio, which has struggled this summer.
Number two at $6.5 Fox's "The Wolverine," which will be down around 60% for its second weekend from its less than expected initial $53 million take. At #4, now just under $100 million, is Warner Bros.' surprise hit "The Conjuring" at $4.3 million. Rounding out the top 5 is Universal's "Despicable Me 2" with another $3.1 million as it heads to a possible $800 million+ worldwide total. It could wind up the most profitable movie in the studio's history.
The rest of the top 10 grossed under $2.5 million down to just over $1.25 million, with holdovers "Grown Ups 2," "Turbo," "Red 2," "The Heat" and "Pacific Rim" adding enough business to bring the total a bit up from last year.
Although A24 has reported no Friday numbers, reports from the four New York/Los Angeles theaters playing their acclaimed Sundance competitor "The Spectacular Now" indicate heavy business and many sellouts, suggesting another late summer specialized hit on the heels of "The Way, Way Back," "Fruitvale Station" and "Blue Jasmine."

Santa Barbara City Councilman Frank Hotchkiss was thrown off his horse in the staging ground for the Old Spanish Days Historical Parade on Friday, and was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries, according to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.
Firefighters and paramedics responded to the call at about 11:45 a.m., and took Hotchkiss to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital as a precaution, since head and neck injuries are a big concern when falling from that height, fire Battalion Chief Robert Mercado said.
?It?s a big distance,? he noted.
Hotchkiss, reached by telephone Friday afternoon, said most of his lower left back was very sore, and hospital staff were checking to make sure nothing was broken, but he hopes to be up and about in a day or two.
?I was at Pershing Park before the parade,? he said. ?It?s a good thing, too; all of a sudden my horse shied and bucked me kind of straight up in the air. I landed flat on my back on the grass.?
He has ridden horses many times before, but had never been on that particular horse, he said.
The animal apparently was spooked when Hotchkiss pulled off his hat to wave to someone.
The Historical Parade is one of the largest equestrian parades in the country, and has hundreds of riders on horseback making their way up State Street every year for Old Spanish Days.
City firefighters also responded to an incident involving a fall from a horse near the end of the parade on Micheltorena Street, Mercado said. A man and woman were riding the same horse and it's unclear whether the horse tripped or was spooked, but both people ended up on the ground, according to City Fire.?
Both people were taken to the hospital on backboards, as a cervical spine precaution. They complained of back and neck pain, responding firefighters said. It's normal for City Fire to respond to a few incidents at the parade every year, though the riders who come out for Fiesta are usually very experienced, they noted.?

Earlier this week negotiations between CBS and Time Warner Cable broke down and for a few minutes, channels started dropping from the cable service. An extension on the deadline brought channels back quickly, but time is up once again and subscribers are being greeted by the message above. The blackout applies to CBS in New York City, Los Angeles and Dallas, plus Showtime, The Movie Channel, Flix and Smithsonian Channel nationwide. According to CBS, this is the first time it's ever been dropped from a cable system, and it has followed up with a note from Showtime claiming TWC removed the premium channel despite authorization to keep it while negotiations continue. Time Warner Cable has its own statement, claiming CBS has "refused to have a productive discussion" since the Tuesday morning extension in talks.
With the NFL season looming we'll see how long TWC is willing to push CBS.com (which some of you have reported is being blocked by CBS), Aereo and antennas as alternative solutions in these major markets and whether CBS is willing to live without the viewership. For now, subscribers missing The Doctors can check out a video from TWC explaining exactly what happens behind the scenes when channels go dark.
Update: TechCrunch has a statement from CBS confirming it's blocked Time Warner Cable customers from streaming full episodes. This is similar to Fox blocking Cablevision subscribers on Hulu during a carriage dispute in 2010, although that turned out to be short-lived.

Jack White and Karen Elson in 2008.
The breakup between former White Stripes singer Jack White and his ex-wife, singer-songwriter and model Karen Elson isn't so friendly any more.
Two years ago the pair held a party to celebrate their divorce (they had married in 2005), but according to the Nashville City Paper, a Nashville circuit court judge granted Elson a restraining order against White on July 22, which bars the singer from having any contact with her "whatsoever except as it relates to parenting time with the parties' minor children."
Elson has primary custody of Scarlett Teresa and Henry Lee, the couple's two children. In the restraining order affidavit, she calls White an unfit father who refused to attend family counseling. She adds that White has a violent temper and has left her harassing text messages and emails that pressured her about the divorce's settlement terms.
One incident named in the filing indicated that White wanted his children taken out of a class where another entertainer's child was because White thought the child's parent had "ripped off" his music. Another time, White reportedly was upset with Elison when she attended the wedding of another performer, who he also said "ripped off" his music. The musician(s) were not named in the order.
"Wife fears for her and the children's safety as a result of this harassment," the order said.
Rose Palermo, who represents Elson, said she and her client are trying to resolve the dispute in private. Palermo requested a custodial psychological evaluation for White.?
The pair are due in court Aug. 29 for a custody hearing.
It's been an interesting, Cagereaders. Who had a good week, and who didn't?
Hot -- Tito Ortiz and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson: The reaction to their upcoming fight in Bellator on pay-per-view was mixed. But the reason these two are having a good week is that after a combined 0-6 record in their last three fights, they are suddenly headlining a pay-per-view again. As Brock Lesnar would say, that's turning chicken [expletive] into chicken salad.
Not -- Tim Kennedy: After beating Roger Gracie, Kennedy is just looking for a fight. First, he was supposed to fight Vitor Belfort, but Belfort only wants a championship fight at middleweight or a light heavyweight fight. Now, he's hoping for Wanderlei Silva. Can someone just get this man a fight and improve his week?
Hot -- Michael Chandler: Does David Rickels know what has happened yet? He was steamrolled by Chandler at Wednesday night's Bellator. Chandler is now 12-0, and in desperate need of challenges in Bellator's lightweight division.
Not -- This guy's tattoo: A guy turned Ronda Rousey's Body Issue picture into a tattoo. A TATTOO. There's dedication to being a fan, and then there's this.
Hot -- Nick Diaz: It's his birthday! The man from Stockton turns 30 years old today. Will he stay retired?
Still taking temperature -- The Korean Zombie: Chan Sung Jung will get the chance to take the UFC featherweight belt from Jose Aldo on Saturday at UFC 163. He will have to win over Jose Aldo, who hasn't lost since 2005.

New London - Residents will be asked to go to the polls Tuesday to vote up or down the $82 million budget and the nearly one mill increase in the tax rate needed to support it.
Looking Out for Taxpayers petitioned for a referendum in June after the City Council approved the 2013-14 municipal spending plan. The group collected nearly 200 more signatures than the 483 required to prompt the vote.
Voters will approve or reject $41,565,314 for city government; $40,414,666 for education; and a tax rate of 27.5 mills, a 0.9 mill increase.
The $82 million budget represents a 3.8 percent increase in taxes.
City Councilor Donald Macrino, chairman of the Finance Committee, said he supports the budget, which began July 1 and ends June 30, 2014, and hopes residents will approve it.
"I'm behind the budget. I don't think any of us are happy with it or our state of affairs, but given all the stresses on the city, we honestly gave it our best shot to come out with as fair a budget as we could,'' Macrino said. "Everyone will feel a bit of pain. I feel bad about the police department, the public works, the schools and the citizens who have to pay the taxes."
Polls at all three polling places will open at 6 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
District 1 residents will vote at New London High School, 490 Jefferson Ave., and District 2 residents will cast their ballots at Harbor School, 432 Montauk Ave.
Voters in the city's third district, the south end of the city, will vote at Ocean Beach Park. Voters may enter the park free of charge at the Park Street gate. Assistant registrars will be available for curbside voting for those who cannot access the Port 'N Starboard banquet hall, where the voting machines are set up.
In November, residents will be asked to vote on the 2012-13 budget, five months after the end of the fiscal year. Looking Out for Taxpayers also successfully petitioned for the vote on that $81 million budget.
It is not clear what will happen if the 2012-13 budget is not approved in November.

SHANGHAI, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Environmental watchdog groups in China have accused two manufacturing facilities, including Apple supplier Foxconn, of violating water pollution standards.
Five groups, led by activist Ma Jun's Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs, released a film that describes high levels of nickel and copper in the sediment near discharge vents from the Foxconn manufacturing facility near Shanghai, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday. The pollutants are flowing into a river that runs into the Huangpu river, the Journal said.
The other factory named in the film is run by Taiwanese supplier UniMicron Technology Corp.
Foxconn responded to the film by saying it is not the only factory that discharges waste water into the river.
UniMicron did not respond to requests for a comment, the Journal said.
In an interview, Ma said neighbors near the factories have complained about high levels of heavy metal in their land. Some researchers have said as much as 20 percent of China's farmland contains high levels of heavy metals.
China's Ministry of Environmental Protection refused in February to release a pollution study of the country's arable land, calling the information a "state secret."
The China Labor Watch organization this week accused Pegatron Corp., a Taiwanese company that also works for Apple, of discharging pollutants into the Shanghai sewer systems.
The watchdog group said Pegatron was discharging heavy metals into the sewer system of the city of Suzhou.

Actor George Clooney, pictured in March 16, 2012 in Washington, DC., launched a remarkable attack on hedge fund billionaire Daniel Loeb on Friday.
Actor George Clooney attacked one of Wall Street's most famous hedge fund managers, billionaire Daniel Loeb, accusing him of criticizing Hollywood studios for their business practices, while failing to understand the movie industry himself.
"(Loeb) calls himself an activist investor, and I would call him a carpetbagger, and one who is trying to spread a climate of fear that pushes studios to want to make only tent poles (big blockbuster movies)," Clooney said in an interview with the Hollywood industry web site, Deadline.com.
Clooney was referring to recent critical comments made by the Third Point hedge fund head slamming Sony Entertainment, saying summer films "bombed spectacularly."
Click here to read the full article on Deadline.com. ?
During the interview, which was published on Friday, reporter Mike Fleming Jr asked the Hollywood star about Loeb's recent criticism of Sony Pictures chiefs Michael Lynton and Amy Pascal for two under-performing films "After Earth" and "White House Down."
Loeb, whose fund controls 7 percent of Sony stock, is pressing for Sony to spin off its entertainment assets and likened those misfires to historic flops "Waterworld" and "Ishtar."?
?I?ve been reading a lot about Daniel Loeb, a hedge fund guy who describes himself as an activist but who knows nothing about our business, and he is looking to take scalps at Sony because two movies in a row underperformed?
"When does the clock stop and start for him at Sony? Why didn?t he include "Skyfall," the 007 movie that grossed a billion dollars, or "Zero Dark Thirty" or 'Django Unchained?'" Clooney said, referring to recent box-office successes.
"You can?t cherry pick a small time period and point to two films that didn?t do great," he said in the interview from Italy, where Clooney is working on post-production for his latest directing effort, "The Monuments Men."
"It makes me crazy. Fortunately, this business is run by people who understand that the movie business ebbs and flows and the good news is they are ignoring his calls to spin off the entertainment assets," Clooney said.
The Academy Award-winning actor then launched into an attack on hedge fund managers themselves.
"How any hedge fund guy can call for responsibility is beyond me, because if you look at those guys, there is no conscience at work. It is a business that is only about creating wealth, where when they fail, they get bailed out and where nobody gets fired.?
"A guy from a hedge fund entity is the single least qualified person to be making these kinds of judgments, and he is dangerous to our industry,? Clooney said.
