Figuring Out Fatherhood: Little Horrors - Parentdish

Figuring Out Fatherhood: Little HorrorsBen Wakelng

"Can we go trick or treating this year, Daddy?" says my five-year-old son, Isaac. My heart sinks.

It sinks because I hate Halloween. I'm the Scrooge of Halloweens. Some of my fondest childhood memories consist of lying on the lounge floor next to my dad pretending not to be in as the door is knocked by a thousand different children all after one thing: sweets. And, if you didn't give them sweets, you got your doors egged.

Come to think of it, most of my Halloween-related memories are quite negative. There was the time I dressed up as a vampire for a fancy dress party. In order to stand out, and to terrify the kids, I bought some cheap novelty cat-eye lenses from the Internet ? something which ranks in my list of top 10 things I'd never do again. I spent the whole time looking like I was sobbing my eyes out, tears streaming down my cheeks and streaking my make-up as I slowly lost the use of my corneas.

In the following years, not to be seen as a completely miserable old grump, I opened the door to trick-or-treaters and begrudgingly held out a bucket of sweets, from which they took one or two handfuls of candy. (I thought you were only meant to take one sweet, but whatever.)

I would have been more than happy to give away sweaty palmfuls of Parma Violets if the costumes had even the slightest amount of thought put into them - but newsflash, child: wearing a Scream mask does not constitute a good costume, nor does rubbing a bit of flour in your hair.

Anyway, whinge over.

i

As parents we often do things we don't want to for the sake of our children: being a human horse, kicked around the living room floor by a son who wants you to gallop; sitting through Shrek for the billionth time; and now, it seems, going trick or treating.

i

For my children, Halloween is an exciting time of pumpkin faces, scary outfits, and sweets. Lots of sweets. So many sweets, in fact, that they spend the next three hours wildly bouncing off the walls like human pinballs.

So it will be with slumped shoulders, then, that this year I'll be traipsing my two boys up and down our street, knocking on doors and shivering in the cold.

But we're doing it slightly differently this year in that we're not going to every house on our street, and we've pre-warned the people who we are visiting of our impending arrival.

Why? Because we know that there are some miserly old grumps on our road, like me, who will answer the door with a sour face ? or not answer at all. And I don't want to see the look on my kids' faces when it fades from hopeful excitement to eye-opening disappointment as the door remains unopened and they trudge back down the path.

And so we have gone full circle, and I find myself feeling guilty that just a few years ago I was that stodgy old miser who refused to open his door, or reluctantly handed out sweets with a face like sour milk.

I ask you then, when someone knocks on your front door and excitedly squeals 'trick or treat' through the letterbox to happily hand over as many sweets as they can grab ? even if their costume consists of an old pillowcase with eyeholes. After all, it won't be you who has to deal with the sugar crash.

Are you going trick or treating? Do you enjoy it - or is it purely for the kids?

Want a white iPad Mini? You may wait at least 2 extra weeks

7 hrs.

If you're itching to get your hands on a white iPad Mini, you might wind up waiting at least two extra weeks for it to ship?? assuming that you're pre-ordering the tablet through Apple's website, of course.

Pre-orders of the?Wi-Fi-only versions of the iPad Mini are expected to ship on Nov. 2???as the device hits store shelves???but, as usual, those who were slow to place an order are stuck waiting a bit longer.

Currently the Apple website estimates that new pre-orders of any white iPad Mini models will be delayed by about two weeks. New pre-orders of black versions of the tablet are still slated to ship on Nov. 2. (Pre-orders which were placed before the changed shipping timeframe should arrive on time, of course.) If you haven't pre-ordered a white iPad Mini yet and really want one on Nov. 2, your best bet may involve a stroll to a brick-and-mortar store (and perhaps even a wait in a line).

It's worth noting that if you're looking to get an LTE-enabled iPad Mini, in either color, you'll definitely be waiting the extra two weeks as the device isn't scheduled to hit shelves (and shipping centers) until that time.

As a reminder: The iPad Mini starts at $329 for a 16GB Wi-Fi-only model. 32Gb and 64 GB Wi-Fi-only models are available for $429 and $529, respectively, while their LTE-capable counterparts are priced at $459, $559, and $659, for the 16GB, 32GB, and 63GB versions, respectively.

Rookie Martin races past Vikings

New York Jets v New England PatriotsGetty Images

Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow sat down for a one-on-one interview with Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, and one of the first things he mentioned was: ?We?ve had a history here of people talking too much. You just don?t want to do that.?

Mission accomplished.

Tebow largely danced around the notion of his frustration at not playing a bigger role, taking the good teammate role while admitting he?d prefer to do more.

?I don?t know if that?s not being a team guy,? Tebow said. ?I think that I try to be open and honest in talking to the media. Obviously try to be honest. But sometimes you don?t have to talk about everything. We?ve had a history here of people talking too much. You just don?t want to do that. Why make it something if it?s not??

Tebow?s squeaky clean image keeps him from appearing bitter and divisive, while clearly wishing he could do more.

?Obviously, I?m a competitor,? he said. ?And you get frustrated with losing. When we win, I?m excited about winning. That way I get the ups and downs of a football season. But I also know that it?s never as good as it seems, it?s never as bad as seems. You always have to stay focused because you never know for me.

?My role, it could expand. So you just got to always be ready.?

Asked if it was fair to starter Mark Sanchez to have such a popular player as the backup, Tebow replied: ?I feel like one of the reasons they brought me here was to help make him better by being someone that could come in and convert some first downs, make some plays, do different things. So, hopefully our being together will benefit both of us.?

Mehta joked with Tebow about running for public office, and he probably should. Because his ability to take potentially controversial topics and make them innocuous is as impressive as anything he?s done on the field as a Jet.

AP basketball poll: Indiana is preseason No. 1

Indiana is No. 1 in The Associated Press' preseason Top 25 for the third time and the first since the 1979-80 season.

The Hoosiers return all five starters, including 7-foot sophomore Cody Zeller.

They received 43 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel Friday. Louisville and Kentucky, the teams ranked second and third, received the rest of the first-place votes with Louisville getting 20 and the defending national champion the other two.

Ohio State and Michigan join Indiana as Big Ten teams in the top five. The last time a conference had three teams in the preseason top five was 2008-09 when Connecticut, Louisville and Pittsburgh of the Big East were second, third and fifth, respectively.

North Carolina State, Kansas, Duke, Syracuse and Florida round out the top 10.

Skinny Minnie: Disney fave gets Barneys makeover

NEW YORK (AP) ? Did Minnie Mouse do a catwalk cleanse?

For a brief moment in Barneys New York's upcoming holiday window display, Minnie becomes a long, lean high-fashion model ? and the skinny Minnie is drawing some criticism.

The Barneys display puts Disney characters on the runway in front of animated versions of industry bigwigs in a short film that features Minnie's daydream sequence strutting her stuff in Paris in a hot-pink, ruffle-covered Lanvin dress.

Runway Minnie gets only a few seconds of face time, but when she does, she transforms into a model who is tall and thin with longer legs, leaner arms and daintier gloved hands than the polkadot-loving character who typically embraces her curves from head to toe. Daisy Duck, Cruella De Vil and Goofy get similar insta-slim treatments.

For most of the film, however, Minnie and crew look their usual selves. Minnie has her big bows, round face and signature wide-width pumps.

"Viewers will recognize the Minnie they know and love, as she takes a turn on the runways of Paris and in her own mirror, wearing a custom creation from one of the world's greatest designers," Barneys said in a statement to The Associated Press. "Some of the early highly stylized fashion illustrations have garnered significant attention, however the reality is Disney's Minnie Mouse proves that true fashion lovers come in all styles and sizes."

Still, the makeover has prompted several online petitions targeting Barneys and Disney for perpetuating the skinny-model image that the fashion industry has been criticized for many times over.

One of the louder voices is Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, executive director and founder of SumofUs.org, a consumer watchdog group. In just over a week, the SumofUs.org petition has attracted close to 80,000 online "signatures." There are a half-dozen additional petitions up on Change.org, including one with more than 135,000 supporters. It was launched by Ragen Chastain, who self-published the book "Fat: The Owners Manual ? Navigating a Thin-Obsessed World with Your Health, Happiness and a Sense of Humor Intact."

Stinebrickner-Kauffman said she took this issue on after a friend of hers ? a mother to a grade-school daughter ? posted about it on Facebook. "Girls have seen Minnie Mouse as a healthy character in their lives ... to have her image subverted like that is troubling."

Girls are "bombarded" by impossible physical figures in the media, says Stinebrickner-Kauffmann, and to have such a familiar face ? and shape ? be turned into such a skinny Minnie seems like it could fuel the insecurities young women often have about themselves and their bodies.

Models are indeed taller and thinner than most women, and those features are further exaggerated in fashion illustrations used by designers ? and by Barneys in its promotional material for the Nov. 14 launch of its displays, says Steven Stipelman, assistant chair of fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Those are the images that are being protested, as the film short has not been released beyond the trailer provided to The Associated Press. The film does not feature the drawing that has been the focus of criticism, though Minnie does undergo a transformation as soon as she steps onto the catwalk in front of Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz, International Herald Tribune reporter Suzy Menkes and Harper's Bazaar global fashion director Carine Roitfeld, among other recognizable faces. Runway Minnie even masters the straight-ahead stare and bouncy strut that real-life models aim to master.

She then comes quickly back to reality and her everyday appearance, and the film ends with her just as happy as herself window-shopping on Madison Avenue as she was in Paris.

"Fashion drawing is a fantasy," said Stipelman, who teaches illustration. "They are conveying a mood, a feeling and attitude. It's supposed to make you feel like you want the attitude of this person, not like you're going on a diet so you can look like this person."

He adds, "It looks exaggerated because you know what you're comparing it to. If you didn't know what Minnie looked like, you probably wouldn't even notice."

Phiaton Moderna MS 200

The Phiaton Moderna MS 200's carbon graphite fiber exterior and bright red accents may be flashy, but this pair of earphones offers an audio performance that's more refined than over-the-top. At $150 (list), they fit squarely in the middle of a crowded field of quality in-canal earphone options. It's hard to find fault with them?sure, they could fit a bit more securely or comfortably, but their response isn't very exaggerated, bucking the current trend of boosted bass and overly sculpted highs. This is not to say they suffer from a lack of low-end response?deep bass tracks are conveyed with plenty of presence, cleanly and distortion-free, even at top volumes. In a field with many options to choose from, however, it's worth reading on to get a sense of how the MS 200 compares.

Design
The red-and-black design of the Moderna MS 200 may not be original, but it is striking, nonetheless. Flexible black bases connect the red audio cable to the black-and-red, carbon graphite fiber-coated earpieces. The flat, linguini-esque red cable trend was started by Monster Beats by Dr. Dre, and now we see flat cables gracing plenty of competing models, like the recent Sony X Headphones (MDR-X10). The Phiaton Moderna MS 200 uses a bright red cable, but rather than a flat or round cable, it's like a hybrid, oval shape.

The in-line phone remote control and microphone work with Apple iOS devices, as well some popular Android phones and tablets, like Samsung's Galaxy series. Call clarity is about what you'd expect?not mind-blowing, but intelligible. Cell phones tend to have only mediocre call audio quality to begin with?the MS 200 can't do much to improve upon it, but the isolation for the in-canal earpieces at least shuts out competing noise.

Included with the Moderna MS 200, a classy, tube-shaped black-and-red snap-shut carrying pouch, as well as a total of five pairs of red silicon ear tips in various sizes, and one pair of Comply foam ear tips. The fit of the ear tips is stable, but they don't create the strongest seal in your ears, and over long listening sessions, can begin to feel slightly uncomfortable.

Performance
The Moderna MS 200 offers solid audio performance, with no distortion on deep bass tracks, even at top (and unsafe) listening levels. The Knife's "Silent Shout" is a challenging track for many sub-$200 earphones and headphones?the deep bass can often lead to distortion when the volume is maxed out. The MS 200, however, had no such issues, and conveyed the thunderous sub-bass of the electronic kick drum with clarity and not much embellishment. Despite the clean delivery, this is definitely not the pair for you if you're seeking booming low end.

The sound signature is more flat than much of the competition?it's most noticeable on classical tracks like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances." Where some bass-heavy earphones tend to exaggerate the lower register strings and percussion to the point that they sound unnatural, the MS 200 reproduces the frequency range in a more accurate manner. This means that some highs seem a bit less crisp than they do on a sculpted pair as well, but overall, the response is well balanced.

Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" still packs plenty of punch?the drum loop hits and bass synths have plenty of thump to them, but it's not the booming feeling you get with a bass-heavy pair like the Denon Urban Raver AH-C300 In-Ear Headphones . The response basically handles the whole range?sub-bass to highs?without tweaking anything too much.

Compared with the slightly more expensive Bowers & Wilkins C5 In-Ear Headphones , a standout in the below-$200 price range, the Moderna MS 200 offers significantly less low frequency boost, and slightly less crisp highs, resulting in a response that is closer to a clinical, super-accurate pair like the Etymotic ER-4PT . Another notable difference between the C5 and the MS 200 is the fit?the C5's earpieces have a loop that presses against your ear for added stability, putting less pressure on the ear tips to do all the work. The MS 200 stays in place, but sometimes the seal in the canal doesn't feel as secure as it could be. Overall, the MS 200 sounds great?solid audio performance for the purist-leaning listener on a $150-range budget. If this price is still too high for your budget, consider the slightly less expensive Shure SE215 ?or the much more affordable AKG K 350?both deliver excellent performance for their price.

Daily Maverick - Eternal sunshine of the finance minister: Budgeting ...

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan began his medium term budget policy statement (MTBPS) speech yesterday by referring to the crisis the country found itself in 20 years ago. The first democratic national elections were still two years away and factional violence was evident across the country. We did manage, then, to tear ourselves away from the vertiginous allures of the abyss.?

The minister contrasted those dark days with the problems we currently face: the ?crisis of labour relations in the mining sector?, the ?mismanagement of supplies to schools and hospitals in some provinces? and the downgrading of ?our ability to service debt?. The parallel he drew is that the country and the broader society must act now, as it did then, to overcome our problems.?

The minister has issued a valiant call to arms for all of us. The treasury is not short on suggestions (and even a few details) for what we need to do. The translation of these suggestions into actions remains the challenge.? ?

The National Development Plan (NDP) is the point of reference and departure for the treasury?s macroeconomic strategy. Government endorsed the NDP in September and the treasury has wasted no time in aligning itself with the vision of the NPC, led by Trevor Manuel.?

The recent events at Marikana have left their mark on the treasury. The first targeted area for government, according to the MTBPS, is ?(r)e-establishing orderly business relations?. There?s also the goal of ?(i)mproving living conditions for miners and upgrading informal settlements?. For the right or wrong reasons, miners and the mining sector are top of government?s mind, ahead of other vulnerable groups.

That?s not to say the MTBPS has been captured by immediate crises and short-term thinking. The long-term goals of the NDP?s 2030 plan are addressed by the Treasury, as is the limit in the ability of the state to increase spending on public-sector wages and social grants. The MTBPS clearly states that the growth seen in state expenditure over the past decade must come to an end. It projects a real increase in the compensation of state employees of just 1.3% over the medium-term. In contrast it wants growth in capital payments of 4.3% over the period.

This is easy to claim but harder to enforce. Higher-than-budgeted wage settlements in this financial year have already led to increased estimates for expenditure, and public-sector unions such as Samwu might yet strike for higher wages over the next few months. ?

In particular, the focus on consolidating not just overall public-sector wage spending but personnel numbers is likely to be met with howls by public-sector unions. The details of these plans will only be announced during the 2013 Budget, well after the voting at Mangaung is over, so there?s a chance that the fragile peace inside the alliance will hold until next year.?

Despite overly optimistic calls for moderation in wage settlements, there is clear long-term planning for future spending. For example, Chapter 3 of the MTBPS recognises the changing demographics of South Africa and the implications that these trends have for current and future spending. The increased ageing of the population and the future decrease in younger age cohorts has implications for future spending on basic education and child grants.?

The mini-budget therefore emphasises the need to ensure quality outcomes in spending by Basic Education, rather than just throwing more money at the department. There is also a detailed outline of how Treasury will ensure that it gets greater bang for its buck.

This outline of this plan to reduce waste and corruption includes centralised procurement led by a chief procurement officer in the National Treasury, reviews of large tenders by Parliament?s Standing Committee on Public Accounts and the office of the Auditor-General and generally increasing the authority and capacity of the Treasury to investigate the efficacy of tenders.?

Overall, the Treasury will look for greater centralisation and control of spending in other spheres of government. On the one hand, these measures could help to arrest the rot in provincial and local government spending. On the other hand, this is an admission by the Treasury that the devolution of government powers and spending hasn?t worked and will be reversed (partially) over the medium-term.?

The minister ended his speech by recognising that our historical trading partners ?will be in difficulty for some time to come? and called for finding ?new ways of implementing our plans, creating jobs and generating inclusive growth?. It remains to be seen if the rest of us can emerge from our laagers and entrenched positions to validate the minister?s positive rhetoric. DM

Twitter principles of social networking increase family success in nesting birds

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

New research carried out by scientists at Universities in Exeter, France and Switzerland reveals for the first time the importance of social networking in producing a successful family.

The study found that, regardless of how big and healthy individual chicks are, what really matters to their chances of surviving and breeding is how siblings in the nest interact with each other, with cooperative families faring best.

Differences in patterns of feeding between mothers and fathers were a key factor in determining the behaviour of their offspring, according to the study published online today in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Mothers selected weaker, hungrier nestlings while fathers did the opposite, choosing those who were the most competitive.

Dr Nick Royle, from the University of Exeter, was involved in the study, alongside scientists from Universities in Toulouse, Bern and Basel. He said: "Whilst it is well-established that large, strong offspring are generally expected to be more successful than small, less well-nourished offspring, it has not been previously shown that the success of both individuals and families as a whole depends on the structure of social interactions among offspring."

"As any parent knows, parental care can be hard work and there is often a squeeze on the availability of resources in families. This sets the scene for conflicts of interest among family members over how these resources are allocated. Our study shows that the most successful families are those that are best at resolving these conflicts; parents and offspring that are most effective at responding to each other are the most successful."

Scientists from the University of Exeter's Centre for Ecology & Conservation worked with colleagues from the Universities of Basel and Bern in Switzerland and the French Universit? Paul Sabatier alongside French scientific research organisation CNRS. It was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council and the Swiss National Science Foundation.

63 broods of begging great tits breeding in nest boxes in woods around Bern in Switzerland were filmed when the nestlings were 10 days old, when both parents feed the young using different methods of selecting which nestlings receive food. The researchers examined the network of social interaction between the siblings, and then monitored the parents and their offspring to see whether they survived and went on to breed the following year.

Great tit mothers prefer to feed hungrier, smaller nestlings whereas fathers choose stronger, larger nestlings to feed. So in families where mothers provide most of the food, the young are more 'gregarious'. They moved around more and interacted more strongly with one another as the hungrier nestlings tried to move closer to their mothers to be fed. In broods where fathers fed more than mothers, nestlings moved around much less because the more competitive offspring took up the best positions near him.

Small and medium-sized broods fared better when the mother was the main feeder, whilst larger broods were more successful when the father provided most of the feeds. This could be because of constraints on space in larger families, making it harder for chicks to move around and jostle for position and easier to respond to fathers, with their simpler feeding rules, not mothers.

Dr Nick Royle concluded: "Users of Twitter will know that the more interactions they have, the more successful their profile is likely to be, and it's similar for nesting great tits; at least at nests where mothers provide most of the feeds. When fathers do most of the work offspring are much less gregarious. For young great tits social networking is related to the amount of physical contact each nestling has with their siblings, not the amount of tweeting they do. But using our social networks measure enabled us to demonstrate a novel link between how family members interact with one another and the success of those families."

"Our approach is not just applicable to social interactions in birds, however, or just for families. It could also be applied to understanding what patterns of social organisation best determine success between competing groups of humans, such as in business or team sports."

Researchers explore how the brain perceives direction and location

Monday, October 22, 2012

The Who asked "who are you?" but Dartmouth neurobiologist Jeffrey Taube asks "where are you?" and "where are you going?" Taube is not asking philosophical or theological questions. Rather, he is investigating nerve cells in the brain that function in establishing one's location and direction.

Taube, a professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, is using microelectrodes to record the activity of cells in a rat's brain that make possible spatial navigation?how the rat gets from one place to another?from "here" to "there." But before embarking to go "there," you must first define "here."

Survival Value

"Knowing what direction you are facing, where you are, and how to navigate are really fundamental to your survival," says Taube. "For any animal that is preyed upon, you'd better know where your hole in the ground is and how you are going to get there quickly. And you also need to know direction and location to find food resources, water resources, and the like."

Not only is this information fundamental to your survival, but knowing your spatial orientation at a given moment is important in other ways, as well. Taube points out that it is a sense or skill that you tend to take for granted, which you subconsciously keep track of. "It only comes to your attention when something goes wrong, like when you look for your car at the end of the day and you can't find it in the parking lot," says Taube.

Perhaps this is a momentary lapse, a minor navigational error, but it might also be the result of brain damage due to trauma or a stroke, or it might even be attributable to the onset of a disease such as Alzheimer's. Understanding the process of spatial navigation and knowing its relevant areas in the brain may be crucial to dealing with such situations.

The Cells Themselves

One critical component involved in this process is the set of neurons called "head direction cells." These cells act like a compass based on the direction your head is facing. They are located in the thalamus, a structure that sits on top of the brainstem, near the center of the brain.

He is also studying neurons he calls "place cells." These cells work to establish your location relative to some landmarks or cues in the environment. The place cells are found in the hippocampus, part of the brain's temporal lobe. They fire based not on the direction you are facing, but on where you are located.

Studies were conducted using implanted microelectrodes that enabled the monitoring of electrical activity as these different cell types fired.

Taube explains that the two populations?the head direction cells and the place cells?talk to one another. "They put that information together to give you an overall sense of 'here,' location wise and direction wise," he says. "That is the first ingredient for being able to ask the question, how am I going to get to 'point B' if I am at 'point A.' It is the starting point on the cognitive map."

The Latest Research

Taube and Stephane Valerio, his postdoctoral associate for the last four years, have just published a paper in the journal Nature Neuroscience, highlighting the head direction cells. Valerio has since returned to the Universit? Bordeaux in France.

The studies described in Nature Neuroscience discuss the responses of the spatial navigation system when an animal makes an error and arrives at a destination other than the one targeted ?its home refuge, in this case. The authors describe two error-correction processes that may be called into play?resetting and remapping?differentiating them based on the size of error the animal makes when performing the task.

When the animal makes a small error and misses the target by a little, the cells will reset to their original setting, fixing on landmarks it can identify in its landscape. "We concluded that this was an active behavioral correction process, an adjustment in performance," Taube says. However, if the animal becomes disoriented and makes a large error in its quest for home, it will construct an entirely new cognitive map with a permanent shift in the directional firing pattern of the head direction cells." This is the "remapping."

Taube acknowledges that others have talked about remapping and resetting, but they have always regarded them as if they were the same process. "What we are trying to argue in this paper is that they are really two different, separate brain processes, and we demonstrated it empirically," he says. "To continue to study spatial navigation, in particular how you correct for errors, you have to distinguish between these two qualitatively different responses."

Taube says other investigators will use this distinction as a basis for further studies, particularly in understanding how people correct their orientation when making navigational errors.

What earnings reports have revealed about ads

Companies that sell advertising have begun releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. Here are highlights of recent quarterly earnings reports from selected Internet and media companies and what they say about the state of spending on advertising.

? Oct. 15: Gannett Co. reports higher net income and revenue, helped by strong gains in political and Olympics-related advertising.

? Oct. 16: Advertising and marketing company Omnicom Group Inc. reports nearly flat earnings and revenue compared with a year earlier, as U.S. revenue grew but international revenue declined.

? Oct. 17: Television and digital media company Media General Inc. says its third-quarter net loss widened because of higher expenses, but revenue grew sharply thanks to an increase in political advertising and the Olympics.

? Oct. 18: Google Inc. says ad revenue rose 16 percent from the same time last year, the slowest pace in three years. The company's ad revenue had climbed by at least 21 percent in each of the previous 10 quarters. As has been the case for the past year, the average prices companies pay Google for ads appearing alongside search results also fell. The decelerating growth in ad revenue is likely being driven by the growing use of smartphones and tablet computers to access the Internet. The ads are more difficult to see on smartphones, in particular, so marketers aren't willing to pay as much.

Microsoft Corp. says revenue in its online services division grew 9 percent to $697 million, while operating loss fell 29 percent to $364 million. Online advertising revenue grew 15 percent to $655 million, with growth in search advertising revenue partly offset by lower revenue from display advertising. Microsoft says search revenue grew because of increased revenue per search and increased volumes.

Campaign surrogates shore up support in final days

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has Springsteen. Republican Mitt Romney has his sons.

They, along with dozens of other celebrities and elected officials, are blitzing through battleground states in the White House race's final days. Their goal: give the presidential campaigns a daily presence in key states even when the men at the top of the ticket (and their running mates) pitch for votes somewhere else.

But these surrogates aren't just viewed as a bonus by the campaigns. They're deployed strategically to shore up crucial constituencies.

That's why Bruce Springsteen and Bill Clinton, two heroes of the middle class, campaigned together last week in Ohio, where white, working-class voters make up about half the electorate.

"This is not a complicated decision," Clinton said there. "If somebody saved my economy, I'd be for him."

Obama's campaign also sent Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a prominent Jewish politician, to heavily Jewish South Florida this week. And Sandra Fluke, who gained notoriety during the political debate over contraception earlier this year, has been appealing to women voters in Colorado and Nevada.

Romney's campaign has turned to Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to rally Hispanic voters in his home state, as well as in Colorado and Nevada, battlegrounds with big Hispanic populations. Former GOP nominee John McCain, who twice won New Hampshire's Republican primary, has been campaigning there for Romney. And Rick Santorum has sought to burnish his GOP primary rival's conservative credentials in North Carolina.

Romney's five adult sons have been among his most effective surrogates. Their focus in countless campaign appearances across the country has been to show their father's softer side. Romney has used one son in particular, Craig, a fluent Spanish speaker, to help broaden his appeal to Hispanic audiences. Craig Romney addressed the Republican convention in Spanish and also has recorded numerous Spanish-language radio ads for his father.

"Between my five kids and my brothers, there are 18 grandkids now that my dad has," son Josh Romney told voters in Virginia this month. "So he thinks about those 18 grandkids. This is why he's in the race."

Obama has popular kids, too. But at ages 14 and 11, don't expect to see Malia and Sasha holding solo campaign events in the dwindling days of the race. In fact, the Obama girls have been largely absent from their father's re-election campaign, except for a brief appearance with their parents at the Democratic Party's national convention.

A look at other key surrogates for Obama and Romney:

THE WIVES:

Like her sons, Ann Romney has used her campaign appearances to vouch for her husband's character. She's become a regular on the talk-show circuit, appearing on "The View," ''The Tonight Show" and even co-hosting "Good Morning America." Mrs. Romney also has been dispatched to Pennsylvania, an Obama-leaning state where polls have tightened. Her trips there are aimed at giving the Republican ticket a foothold in the state without having to deploy the candidate himself.

First lady Michelle Obama is perhaps her husband's most popular surrogate, drawing thousands of people to her rallies and front-page coverage from local newspapers. Her travel schedule is also steeped in strategy. It's the first lady keeping up the Obama presence in North Carolina, a state seen as a longshot for the president and one he hasn't visited in more than six weeks. She's also been a frequent visitor to Wisconsin, allowing her husband to travel elsewhere while she motivates voters in a state where the campaign feels confident.

THE STARS:

Obama's celebrity connections go beyond Springsteen. Long a hit with the Hollywood crowd, the president also has the backing of actresses Rashida Jones and Ashley Judd and rock star Jon Bon Jovi, all of whom have held events throughout the Midwest. Actor Morgan Freeman also lent his celebrity cache to a recent television advertisement promoting Obama's economic record.

Romney has celebrity backers as well, including country singer John Rich, comedian Jeff Foxworthy and former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway. But they tend to appear alongside the Republican nominee at rallies, helping energize the crowd, rather than hold solo events.

THE CABINET:

One advantage of running as an incumbent is the Cabinet.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan's speeches on school reform and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis' interviews about falling unemployment aren't technically campaign events. But they're all about promoting the president's policies.

The campaign also has taken advantage of loopholes in federal election rules that allow Cabinet secretaries to campaign if they're appearing as private citizens, not in their official capacity.

That means Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, a former Colorado senator, frequently shows up at campaign events in his home state. U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, who is black, joined a recent get-out-the-vote bus tour in North Carolina, where Obama needs big turnout from African-Americans. An email announcing Kirk's participation noted he was appearing "in his personal capacity" and urged reporters to refrain from using his official title.

Ohio Bill Would Prohibit TV Blackouts Of NFL Games

By: Associated Press | NBC4

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A state lawmaker has introduced a bill that would stop Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns games from being blacked out on local television if they're not sold out.
?
The bill introduced in the Ohio House on Monday by Democrat Robert Hagan of Youngstown would prohibit any team playing in publicly financed stadiums or arenas from blacking out games. A violation would result in the team repaying its public funding.
?
Hagan acknowledged that any such law would be challenged in court.
?
The Federal Communications Commission has been urged to rescind a federal rule barring cable and satellite systems from showing a sporting event that is blacked out on local stations. The NFL's policy says games not sold out 72 hours before kickoff cannot be shown on local television.

Japan owns almost as much U.S. debt as China

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ?

China's massive stake in U.S. Treasuries gets a lot of attention. But it's Japan, and not China, that has been busy gobbling up U.S. debt over the past year.

In fact, Japan could soon pass China as the largest foreign holder of Treasuries. China held about $1.15 trillion in U.S. bonds through August, the most recent reading available from the Treasury Department. That's little changed from the start of the year and down from 12 months ago.

Meanwhile, Japan has been steadily adding to its Treasury holdings. It now owns $1.12 trillion, up 24% from a year ago.

But despite this trend, it's the Chinese ownership of U.S. debt that has become an issue in the presidential election.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney said in the first debate on Oct. 3 that the level of debt held by China is a problem, and that he would cut all non-critical spending to avoid borrowing more.

China had been buying Treasuries as a way to keep its currency, the yuan, pegged to the U.S. dollar. That helped lower the value of the yuan and made China's exports more competitive in markets such as the United States.

But over the past two years, partly due to U.S. pressure and partly as an effort to curb its own inflation, China has allowed the yuan to rise in value.

Kevin Giddis, head of fixed income for Raymond James Morgan Keegan, noted that China simply doesn't need to buy as much U.S. debt as it did in the past.

Still, President Obama took credit for the rise in the value of the yuan in last week's debate, saying "the currency's actually gone up 11% since I've been president because we have pushed them hard."

But while China's Treasury holdings are down over the past year, Japan had little choice but to buy that U.S. debt, said Nick Stamenkovic, fixed income strategist at RIA Capital Markets in Edinburgh.

Judge Rules Intercepting Traffic on Open WiFi Networks is Legal ...

By Ryan Thomas, on October 22nd, 2012

Illinois Federal Judge James Holderman ruled in August that the Wiretap Act does not apply to unencrypted wireless networks of the kind commonly used in coffee shops, hotels, restaurants, and stores. A company called Innovatio IP Ventures was seeking this preliminary ruling prior to using ?packet sniffing? technology to gather evidence for a case against various businesses it believes are infringing its patents.

While Innovatio is obviously happy with this result, this decision provides some good news for Google as well because it directly contradicts a 2011 ruling in a case involving Google?s Street View cars intercepting traffic from unencrypted networks in residential and commercial areas. As Google?s street view case is now before the U.S. State Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the technology giant now has more reason to hope that the court will side in its favor.

The Wiretap Act makes it a federal crime to intercept electronic communications, but Judge Holderman?s ruling was based on an exception in the law that states that it is not illegal to intercept communications ?made through an electronic communication system that is configured so that such electronic communication is readily accessible to the general public.? In applying this exception to the case, Judge Holderman argued that Innovatio is using commercial hardware and software that is cheap and readily available to the public. ?He went on to say that because the networks Innovatio is seeking to use packet sniffing technology on are unencrypted, they are not private.

The outcome of this case could have repercussions not just for companies like Google and Innovatio, but also for ordinary people concerned about privacy in the digital age. Most wireless networks are secured with a password, but private individuals using the wireless networks of businesses like coffee shops that often operate without encryption run the risk of having their activity intercepted. It is this collateral damage that has many privacy experts watching this lawsuit closely.

A precedent here could open the floodgates for companies to use packet-sniffing technology on unencrypted networks with relative impunity. Europe has already planted itself firmly on the side of privacy, slapping Google with a $22.5 million fine for its street view cars collecting information from unencrypted networks. If the United States goes in a different direction, that could create a very quirky environment for multinational corporations to work within. Many technology and business leaders have been arguing that ?Data is the new oil,? so the outcome of these proceedings will no doubt be under close scrutiny.

Muhyiddin: Asean, Japan need to shape more suitable relationship

Muhyiddin says all these developments will ultimately have an impact on the status quo. ? File pic

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 ? Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today emphasised the need for Asean nations and Japan to shape their future relationship into one more suited to the realities of the 21st century.

He said that if in the past, Japan was Asean?s principal partner in economic matters, today the regional economic engagement had expanded to include China, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand.

?This, too, may change as there is a proposal to reformulate this network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) under an arrangement to be known as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

?All these developments will ultimately have an impact on the status quo. As much as we are happy with the current state of affairs between the two sides, it is time for us to look for new ways to strengthen and deepen these relations,? he said in his keynote address at the 38th Asean-Japan Business Meeting, here.

Malaysia-Japan Economic Association (MAJECA) chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim and Japan?s Ambassador to Malaysia Shigeru Nakamura were also present at the event.

Muhyiddin suggested that to strengthen Asean-Japan relations, four areas had to be explored.

Firstly, he said, there was a need to promote Japanese investments in high value-added sectors such as green technologies, environmental technologies, bio-technologies and information communication technologies in the Asean countries.

Secondly, measures needed to be taken to double trade and investment volume and conclude the signing of the Asean-Japan investment and Asean-Japan services agreements, he said.

Thirdly, he said, it was necessary to improve Asean-Japan connectivity. Fourthly, there was a need to create greater awareness of Asean among Japanese small and medium enterprises (SMEs), he said.

On the Asean Economic Community (AEC), Muhyiddin said Asean should not delay implementation of its plan to form an economic community by 2015.

He said the progress of this project was being monitored at the leaders? level.

?In this context, let me reiterate the strong commitment of the Malaysian government to do what is necessary to form the AEC. Our success rate in the implementation of the AEC blueprint measures over 90 per cent,? he said.

Meanwhile, Nakamura read out a congratulatory message from Japan?s Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda who said Japan was determined to further deepen ?kizuna? (friendship) and would continue to expand political and security cooperation to maintain regional peace and stability.

Strengthening the region?s economic integration would benefit global economies, Noda said.

?Enhancement of Asean connectivity is an issue that Japan will actively work on together with the private sector.

?We want to continue to achieve growth together with Asean,? he added. ?? Bernama

USPTO invalidates Apple rubber-band scrolling patent used in Samsung trial

Android Central

Good news for Samsung this morning, as a preliminary U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) ruling has declared that Apple's "rubber band" scrolling patents invalid. According to reports from TNW and FOSS Patents, the ruling isn't yet set in stone, but it means that, for the moment, 20 patent violation claims against Samsung relating to patent no. 7,469,381 no longer stand. Crucially, FOSS Patents says, this includes one claim involved in Apple's recent courtroom victory against the Korean manufacturer.

The USPTO is reported to have found evidence of prior art in some cases, and in others the inventions were deemed to have been obvious.

The "rubber band" scrolling feature can be found throughout Apple's range of iOS and OSX devices, though Samsung has long since pulled the feature from its Android-based smartphones.

As with everything relating to the on-going litigation between Samsung and Apple, and the wider patent wars, this is not yet finalized. Nevertheless, if things proceed in this direction, it could be helpful to Samsung's appeal in the high-profile California case.
