We all share a sense of pride in our city. ?ACT Labor continues to invest in Canberra to make it an even better place to live, work, study and play.?
Weston Creek is home to 23,000 Canberrans, local businesses and an active community.? It is also about to become Canberra?s next centre of growth and development as the new suburbs of Coombs, Wright, Denman Prospect and Molonglo open up.? The local population growth in these new suburbs of the Molonglo Valley is expected to be around 15,000 over the next decade.?
The Weston group centre serves as the social and economic hub for the Weston Creek district, offering a range of goods, services and employment.? As the demographics of the area change with the development of the new suburbs, there is an increased need for better facilities.
ACT Labor will continue to invest in Weston Creek and its existing and new suburbs, to meet the needs of a growing area of our city and make Weston Creek an attractive and vibrant place to live.
Residents of Weston Creek treasure their local community and ACT Labor recognises the need to continue to invest in this important part of Canberra as it transitions into our newest growth area.? So, there is more to do.

What will ACT Labor will deliver for Weston Creek?
$33 million for a new 50 metre indoor swimming pool
ACT Labor will deliver a pool for Weston Creek residents.? ACT Labor will commit $33 million to build a new 50 metre indoor pool in the area.? Work has already been undertaken on feasibility for a pool site at Stromlo Forest Park.? ACT Labor will also investigate the feasibility of a site close to the Weston Group centre before deciding on the best site for the district.
We?ve already delivered upgrades to the Dickson, Tuggeranong and Erindale swimming pools and we are building a new $28 million aquatic facility for the people of Gungahlin.
A new swimming pool will provide local residents with the same access to top quality facilities and will add to the amenity of the area, providing even more choice of leisure and recreation facilities for local residents.
Construction of the swimming pool will start in 2016 and be completed in 2018.? This pool will provide an important leisure facility not only for the current residents of Weston Creek but for new residents of the developing suburbs of Molonglo Valley.
?
Deliver 80 new car parking spaces at Cooleman Court
In the short term we will provide 80 new car parking spaces at Cooleman Court, in two sites at Liardet Street and Dillon Close.? We will also reconfigure of the two existing car parks to better manage parking demand, and designate more short stay parking for shoppers.? ACT Labor will allocate $400,000 for this work.
In the longer term there will be more parking available in the group centre, with the
co-location of community centres and health services and an extension to the retail centre providing a basement car park.
?
Invest in more buses and a new park and ride and bike and ride to improve public transport links to the city.
ACT Labor will double the number of Xpresso buses between Weston Creek and the City to four in the morning and four in the afternoon.? This includes a direct Xpresso from Cooleman Court to the city.? The cost of these increases in services is $150,000.
Construction of the new park and ride facility at North Weston, on Cotter Road near Kirkpatrick Street, will be completed by early 2013, this is already budget funded at a cost of $400,000.
ACT Labor will deliver a new bike and ride facility at Cooleman Court will be constructed in early 2013, and is already funded in the Budget at a cost of $100,000
?
Better roads to reduce congestion
Stage 2 of the Cotter Road duplication will progress, with $1.08 million of funding in this year?s Budget already allocated for the design of the duplication between Yarralumla Creek Bridge and the Tuggeranong Parkway with funding for construction to be finalised in the 2013-14 ACT Budget. ?
The remaining section of Cotter Road will then be completed in Stage 3 works between Dunrossil Drive and Adelaide Avenue.
These critical investments in better roads, will reduce commuting time and cater for new growth areas in the Molonglo Valley.
?
Shopping centre upgrades
ACT Labor is committed to the next phase of shopping centre upgrades to target those centres where the public areas need a bit of a ?spruce up?.? The focus will be on improving our local spaces and places to make them safer, cleaner and retain their local charm.
As part of ACT Labor?s local shops upgrade program Waramanga, Fisher and Rivett will receive upgrades. ?Waramanga is being upgraded this year.? Fisher will receive a major upgrade involving work on lighting, parking, pavements, seating and improved security.? Minor upgrades at Rivett could include such works as lighting and landscaping.?
Details of the upgrades will be finalised in close consultation with each centre?s business owners and the community.
These centres will be funded as part of ACT Labor?s already announced package of $11 million for local centres.
?
$11 million for a new home of sport for Weston Creek and Molonglo
Sporting facilities very often become the centre of our local community. ?They are where people come together with families and friends after work, with the kids on the weekend, either for fun or for some more serious competition.
We have invested heavily delivered the Stromlo Forest Park facility, a world-class multi-use, recreational sporting facility available to both recreational and professional users.?
Due to its proximity to Weston Creek and the new suburbs of Molonglo Valley, Stromlo is also an important precinct to develop facilities to cater for the sport and recreation needs of the region.
ACT Labor will commit to build the enclosed oval at Stromlo Park. ?The facility will be similar to Greenway Oval and Gungahlin Enclosed Oval with the capacity to be used for AFL, Rugby League, Football and Rugby Union.
This facility will recognise the needs of existing clubs as well as meeting demand into the future.
Design for this facility will be undertaken in the 2013-14 financial year, with construction starting in 2014-15.
